Response from My Senator on FISA Call: " We don't need your Name & Address-we can see your Phone #"
Edited on Wed Jul-09-08 01:02 PM by KoKo01
Response to family member who called NC's Repug Senator Richard Burr this morning. Caller urged Senator Burr to "Support the Constitution in honor of Senator Jesse Helms by voting NO on FISA Immunity for Telecoms." Burr's staffer said "Thank you for your comments we will record them." Family member then said: "Don't you want my name and address since I'm a constituent?" Staffer replied: "No, we see your telephone number and that's all we need."

1. Indeed.
"Thank you for making my point for me," I hope, was your response.

3. I don't think it's a big deal
as Caller ID is common. They probably use it to verify if the caller is a constituent.

But the irony is not lost.

10. Some people continue to use their out-of-state cell phones
one prominent NOLA blogger, for instance, still uses his cell with an Indiana AC. So if he called Vitter's office to ask where he could get a good deal on diapers for his infant girl  , Caller ID would show him still being in Bloomington.

Then again, being hung up on by Diaper Dave wouldn't exactly be the end of the world...

4. That really puts it in perspective
They are totally aware of who we are and how angry we are...and they don't care.

I feel like I'm in a cattle pen...:scared:

5. I was more concerned that my family member called from work...and they would track them
given the bill they just passed. He uses AT&T.... Figures...huh. His company will probably get a note from "Homeland Security" and he will get the "pink slip."

6. Only if he isn't useful
Consider the fact that this was all going on before for DECADES.

If you aren't a threat and you're useful, you'll get to live until the sweeps start.

7. No...it wasn't going on for "Decades" Church Committtee stopped it under Nixon
and it didn't start back "full force" until the Emperor Cheney and his Puppet Bush II...did it all on their own.

Do some Googling then come back and say what you posted.

9. Is your mission on DU to say constantly that "there's nothing new here about spying" ..."just move
along?" WHA? :eyes: You must think some of us don't remember the Church Committee Hearings and all the efforts since.. Is that what you believe ...that Spying is "just normal" so "what's the Big Deal about it?" :eyes: I feel sad if that's what you believe. You would be very uninformed, if that's that's what you believe.

11. I'm pointing out as someone else here on DU pointed out to me:
Edited on Wed Jul-09-08 06:01 PM by Hydra
That the damage was done a long time ago...and while I have plenty of outrage to go around for what happened today, as with the Torture thing, this didn't start with The Chimp.

The fact is, people need to know how long these abuses have been going on in the shadows so that they don't think this will just go away with a Dem in the White House.

13. No...it all worked until "Bush Co" and the Daschle Senate and Pelosi Minority in House..
it was up to our CONGRESS to honor the RULES in PLACE since Church Hearings and Nixon Resignations.

They didn't do this. Google "Church Hearings" and then you will see what I'm talking about about why it's so disgusting that our Dem House and Senate crammed this crap shit stuff down our throat.

And...if you still don't understand go to "Glenn Greewald, Salon" on Google and go back to about May/08 and read all the posts there and the links (which will take you the hours of time the rest of us have spent on FISA & Immmunity...and maybe...you will finally understand why many of us are so upset about the Senate vote today...and the House Vote...before ....

15. I'm aware of where FISA started and why
I'm also a little more aware of what the Gov't has been doing outside the law since WWII than most people.

Lets start with some surface articles and move in with more depth:

http://www.globalsecurity.org/org/news/2001/010601-echelon.htm

http://duncan.gn.apc.org/echelon-dc.htm

http://mediafilter.org/CAQ/CAQ59GLOBALSNOOP.HTML

Now, I can't find the article I originally read regarding this- it was a leak by a woman from inside the system that claimed to have overheard an intercept they had done of a US Congressman. Suffice to say, behind the scenes, you'd think laws didn't apply.

17. It was going on for decades...
Since the 1890s until the Church Committee (and the Rockefeller Commission), the NSA received copies of telegram communications from all the telecom companies. The data mining was so rampant, as found by the investigations, that FISA was created. This stopped illegal spying (for the most part) domestically until around 9/11. So you were both right.

12. When did Jesse Helms ever support the Constitution?
Caller urged Senator Burr to "Support the Constitution in honor of Senator Jesse Helms by voting NO on FISA Immunity for Telecoms."

Seems like Burr, had he done the right thing :eyes: , would have been honoring Helms' legacy in the breach!

14. That's what's funny about my relative (who was NOT a Helms Supporter) framing his call that way.
Jesse Helms whole "persona" was that he was working hard to "Defend our Constitution." So, when my relative called Senator Burr (a RW HACK who got elected by the "Chamber of Commerce" here in NC and "Big Business Outsiders) and mentioned Jesse Helms trying to "frame the call" not as a Democrat but in Honor of deceased Senator Helms who if he'd lived might have come on the Senate Floor and DENOUNCED FISA.

It was clever framing but look at what Burr's office said: "We have your Number." (Yeah...Burr's office has "your number" because they've ABUSED FISA and the TELECOMS in league with "Department of Homeland Security" and "US Justice Department" were happy to allow AT&T to HAVE YOUR NUMBER and your MED RECORDS, CREDIT CARD, FOOD PURCHASES, MORTGAGE PAYMENT, BANK ACCOUNT,401-K info and anything else they can find about you..

That's what I'm saying. And why it was funny that Burr's office admitted they didn't need to know who called them...and if they were one of his constituents here in NC...because the "Phone Number" would reveal EVERYTHING...including if it was a Democrat Calling when Burr is a Conservative Repug...and probably only listens to his REAL CONSTIUENCY...which is RW EVANGELICALS and the NC Chamber of Commerce..PLUS..the Active in NC...John Locke Foundation! And, throw in the Limbaugh and WPTF and other of our RADIO WARRIORS supported by "CLEAR CHANNEL" and lesser.

It's a RACKET!
