Bush calls Berlusconi "amigo"
Not realizing, evidentially, that there's a difference between Italian and Spanish.

Also, the White House press packet described Berlusconi as one of the "most controversial leaders in the history of a country known for government corruption and vice."

8. That "slip" occurred several years ago.
It stays in my mind because we were freaking out here and there was nary a mention in the U.S. press

Uh, isn't Italy an ally of ours? Berlusconi is pretty awful, but Americans love to visit Italy and do so in huge numbers. This is crazy, especially with so many Italian Americans here who treasure their heritage. Even the Italians who don't like Berlusconi aren't going to be real happy with this.
