FISA HEADLINE: "Bowing to President Bush's demands...."
WASHINGTON - Bowing to President Bush's demands, the Senate sent the White House a bill Wednesday overhauling bitterly disputed rules on secret government eavesdropping and shielding telecommunications companies from lawsuits complaining they helped the U.S. spy on Americans...

"This president broke the law," declared Sen. Russell Feingold, D-Wis....

The American Civil Liberties Union, which is party to some of the lawsuits that will now be dismissed, said the bill was "a blatant assault upon civil liberties and the right to privacy."

In a nutshell, what I need to know. I am weary of hearing that a candidate "had to" vote for this or that. If Bush wanted it, I have no doubt that it's toxic to the United States of America. Thank you for listening.

1. So much for "I don't cower."
I had fallen in line to support Obama. He'll still get my vote, but I'm not happy about today. Not one bit.

7. Obama had to do it. The Dem leadership was fully complicit
They knew what Bush was doing, and signed on. Bush would have taken them down with him. Obama had to save their sorry asses.

14. No it isn't . The Dem leaders knew exactly what Bush was doing.

He made damn sure they knew. He isn't an idiot in covering his own sorry ass. They were too cowardly to object at the time. Bush has said they knew. And they have not denied it.

4. I just heard Senator Leahy on Air America.
He said this vote was essentially allowing the powers that be a get out of jail free card. There had been some good provisions added, but this was the issue that upset him so much.

That being said, he was asked if he was disappointed in Obama's vote -- did he question Obama. And Leahy said No, he would trust Obama with our Constitution because he knows how he (Obama) views the Constitution.

That eased my mind somewhat -- I'm still steaming about this, too. If Leahy can live with it and not get an ulcer, I guess I can.
