Just watched the film Sicko, wow! |
|
Not sure why it took so long to get around to watching it, but if you havent seen it yet I highly recommend it.
Its just unbelievable that we dont have universal health care in the US. We pay the highest rates in the world, but at the same time our health care ranks 37th in the world.
He mainly focuses on Canada, Great Brittan and France.. and no one is refused medical care. Among many other things, just the preventative care saves those countries a ton of money. They live longer than we do, have lower infant mortality rates.. I could go on and on.
Personally, a few years ago I left a medium sized company to become self-employed. While I've had insurance most of that time, the difference in coverage has been unbelievable. I've tried three different companies in the last three years, and they all suck! I dont get sick or go to the doctor very often, but the times I have they pretty much deny everything. At this point, have changed it to a lower priced plan, and the only reason to keep paying for even that is if something catastaphic happens it will (hopefully) at least help some with the huge bills.
I was not familiar with what its like to live in a country with universal healthcare... anyone who watches this film would have to be crazy to think we dont need to do that in the US.
Well ok, maybe a billionaire CEO of a US medical corporation could watch it and think thats a bad idea for here.. I wouldnt call that crazy, just blood sucking greedy.
Anyone who lives in the US and is against universal healthcare ...
I dare you to sit down and watch this film and then say its a bad idea.

1. It is easy to get used to having less, if you are unaware of how others prosper. |

Thanks for posting about Sicko, and for Michael Moore, one of our finest social engineers.

3. I feel so lucky to live in Canada! |

It upsets me to hear poor American Red-necks saying they don't want "socialized medicine"! Sheesh! Aint yer roads socialized? Yer schools? Course the Republicans want to privatize those too.

5. I have talked to people just like that |
|
Before would pretty much let it go, but not any more
and found out they literally do not know what the word socialism means
Its very interesting when you ask them point blank
when they even do manage to offer an answer its almost always laughable
and just like the things you list, its even funnier to see the reaction when you tell them what socialism really is

I just saw it recently myself.
People in America, mostly, don't want the taxes taken out of their incomes to provide the social safety net that other countries provide, childcare, health care, unemployment, etc. I guess that's why MM didn't talk about the taxes taken out of peoples' paychecks in Europe.
It's part of the price that has to be paid.
But then what good does it do, if your total tax bill is smaller than people in Europe, but you can be wiped out, homeless and destitute, because of not getting a pension, not getting unemployment, having to work so hard that you have a stroke or heart attack and die because of the unreasonable demands of your employer?
On TV reality shows, like Wife Swap and Supernanny, they talk about how the parents need to give time to the kids. They don't go into the bigger question: Why do other countries have subsidized healthcare, daycare for children, and incomes so that the parents don't have to work two jobs just to pay the bills? They never talk about the fact that our society doesn't realize that it takes a village to raise children.

I couldn't find the movie in the store. I got the movie from Amazon for 90 Pepsi points. The only problem I had with the movie involved the packaging. Stamped in tiny blue letters, the plastic overwrap carried the words "disc manufactured in Mexico".

9. 35 hr work week, 5 weeks paid vacation |
|
I was amazed how much better their standard of living is.
And anything you work over 35 hrs a week goes to even more paid vacation... usually about 20 more days.. which would come to close to 9 weeks paid vacation a year
Plus their kids daycare is free too.
