Romney: 'Now is not the time' to repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, in speaking to CNN's Suzanne Malveaux about his backing of Senator John McCain (R-AZ) for president, said that the timing isn't right to repeal the military's ban on openly gay personnel.

"I think, particularly, in a time of conflict as we're experiencing in Iraq and Afghanistan," Romney said, "this is not the time to be putting in place a major change in policy...and trying to accommodate all of the adjustments that that would require.

"That's something which, clearly, we'll learn from the military and the people who are responsible for managing our troops down the road, but certainly now is not the time to make a change of that nature."

Four retired military officers have called for the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in a study recently released by the Michael D. Palm Center. Openly gay service personnel, such as those seen among Israeli and British ranks, are unlikely to disrupt military operations or lower morale among servicemembers, the study suggested.

1. Is something going on with this airhead dork that I don't know about?
For months we didn't hear jack squat about him now he's in the news all the time making his silly ass pontifications. I hope this isn't some kind of signal that he's on the short short short ;list for vice president. Or maybe I hope it is. With nasty little gnome McCain and this brainless twit on the ticket, no way the Dems will lose in Nov.

BTW that was creative cropping on the photo. However I don't think that ass is Hispanic.

2. According to statistics, 10% of the population is gay.
In http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pratt–Romney_family">this chart, it shows 22 people in the Romney-Pratt family.

At least one out of every 10 is gay.

I wonder which ones he doesn't believe would proudly serve in the military?

I mean besides his own sons.

3. I believe in evidence, not ideology
And as Israeli and British experience show - openly gay military members are NOT likely to disrupt or lower morale.

There is nothing singular about Israeli or Brit gays vs. US gays and no other reason to assume it wouldn't work JUST fine here.

It's really that simple.

4. Remind me again: how many of his 5 children are in the military?

And how many years did he serve?

6. He's not thinking clearly
Well, that's a given. He's a Republican.

Let me expound...

The military needs more recruits. And they aren't getting them.

HOWEVER, there is a woefully untapped demographic out there that has to date been prohibited from joining the military, and as such should be richer than the general populace in potential recruits: homosexuals.

Repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tells should make recruitment surge as repressed potential recruits can now sign up. And that means... more troops with no draft!

See, you can advance equality for all and get the Repubs on your side if you just put it in the proper perspective. For the Repubs, it's continuing the fight without that politically devestating draft.

It's how we got the interstate highway system. "We need them for national security! Rapid transport in case the reds invade! Alternate airstrips for fighter planes!"

Perspective!
