"Only If It's OK For Me To Slap The Shit Out Of You." |

Edited on Thu Jul-10-08 03:07 PM by Redstone
An article on the CNN website asks: "Is It OK to Harass the Smokers We Love?"http://pokedandprodded.health.com/2008/07/09/is-it-ok-to-harass-the-smokers-we-love/In our house, the adults do what they do, and the children don't criticize them. Maybe that's old-fashioned, but there it is. Redstone

I love when somebody asks me, "Do you mind if I smoke?"
I say, "Why, no! Do you mind if I fart? I always like one after a meal."

"Do you mind if I smoke?"
"Why no. Do you mind if I fart? After a meal, I really get the urge to light one up!!"
1976
It was a very good year.
Can you believe we once had smoking on airplanes, all over the plane? And then they stuck all the smokers on the back of the plane, and you'd have to run the smoke gauntlet to get to the restroom.

4. Not in MY house, unless they bring a cannon for backup. Or, actually, outside my |
|
house, because I have a kid with allergies and an office full of equipment that can't deal with smoke residue, so I take the tobacco outside.

6. I doubt harrassment is a persuavive tool to lead someone to a desired result. |
|
I'd wanted to quit for awhile, researched the withdrawal symptoms I'd have...and for how long.
And then did it.
Part of my research was very helpful because I learned that the tingly feeling all over my body...not unlike a leg or arm you've slept on wrong...was a result of all the capillaries healing themselves. It felt like there were ants crawling under my scalp. It drove me about half nuts.
But not half as nuts as it would have if I hadn't known what was happening.

I'll remember that when I make the move, whenever that might be. I do know that smoking is a young man's game, and I'm not a young man anymore.

what to do or not to do. DARE programs in the schools notwithstanding. I'll never forget years ago, when my older son solemnly announced to me at breakfast: "You know, that coffee has caffeine it it, and caffeine is a DRUG."
He only gave me THAT advice once, I can guarantee you.

|
12 y/o told me "Daddy's been drinking a LOT of beer, Mom."
"Wha? How do you figure?" says I.
"Look in the fridge," she says, "there's about ten bottles of beer in the drawer...it's always full."
It's the same lousy ten bottles of beer we'd had in there for a good six months.

10 bottles of beer for six months, unless it's Bud or some other macro swill I advise you to toss it. Bud however, it's like Twinkies, you could keep that shit around for decades and not tell the difference.
BTW in our house, 10 beers would last a few days. Unless it's hot and I had to mow the lawn in which case not so long or it's Bud, in which case it would be there forever. ;-)

You really need an understanding support system if you are going to quit.
Otherwise they will go out and buy cigs and throw them at you.

12. Nah, you just gotta train the kids right. It's a fair deal: "I'm not going to smoke |
|
in the house and make you breathe the secondhand stuff because, well, I shouldn't, and YOU in turn are not going to give me any crap about having a cig on the screen porch. Or in my car with the roof down."
Nor will you give me any crap about anything else I do. Because who is it, after all, who buys the FOOD around here?

to make some compromises. Dammit.
Except when it's 20 degrees outside in the winter. Then all bets are off.

23. Maybe I should have said something to my father |
|
because he smoked a lot and died when I had just turned seven. From a heart attack, but I'm sure that the smoking didn't help matters any. The autopsy showed he was beginning to develop emphysema.
My mother is almost my complete opposite, but from what she says I'm pretty much a clone of him. I wonder what it would have been like to grow up with him?
The last line of your post is quite illuminating of some of your recent FISA posts.

26. I hate the we don't want to have to pay your medical bills crap. |
|
Edited on Fri Jul-11-08 02:35 AM by Wizard777
Here in Maryland 100% of our cigarette tax money goes to paying medicaid. Last year Maryland smokers paid 120 million dollars in medical bill for smokers and nonsmokers a like. That's a hell of a lot of our money spent on medical bills for the nonsmoking lobby to accuse us of being deadbeats. But if we all quit smoking here in Maryland. That deprives medicaid of 120 million every year. Are you nonsmokers going to replace that revenue? I make a 2.00 contribution to Maryland medicaid every time I buy a pack of cigarettes. How many of you nonsmokers would make that same 2.00 daily contribution to medicaid? That's just 1 pack per day. A 2 pack a day smokers contributes 4.00 to medicaid daily. How many of you nonsmokers have THAT kind of commitment to nonsmoking and good health? I would venture to say not many. Our Governor proposed a tax on gym memberships to help with our Billion dollar deficit. The owner of a gym showed up at a public hearing to castigate the idea. How dare they try to put money between someone and good health. How dare they try to tax good health. So you run a free gym? You wouldn't want to put money between someone and good health as you say. Not to mention that exercise can kill you too. It can kill you much quicker than cigarettes would. I've had several friends die within weeks or months of starting exercise programs. I have been smoking Cigarettes and marijuana for over 50 years with no real ill effects. I have recently cut down on my smoking. I've gone from two packs to one per day. I recently approached my doctor about cutting down to a half pack. He told me if I cut down or quit. He will prescribe me nicotine patches to keep my nicotine levels at about 1 pack per day. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor. It causes your heart and veins to shrink. I'm 6'11" one of the things people my size have to worry about is enlarged heart and veins. My smoking counteracts that. He says the nicotine works well. He sees no reason to find other methods of preventing my hearts natural inclination to enlarge. He's always wondered why I've never gotten lung cancer with all teh smoking I do. Until he read the new studies about Marijuana preventing or slowing the growth of lung cancer and other tumors. So basically I have what would be considered two very bad habits that work very well for me. If it wasn't for my smoking I would have more than likely died in my 40's or 50's from an enlarged heart. I'm now 76. When I was a child I had a wonderful doctor that taught me to always listen to my body. It will rarely if ever lie to you. The first time my body tells me smoking is bad for me. I will quit at that precise second. But no amount of harassment in the world will get me to quit. It's like my doctor says, there is a word for people that take health advice from the government. DEAD.
Btw, Harassment is a crime.
