***SPECIAL BONUS POINTS WILL BE AWARDED FOR WHINING***

Hubby's 20K-plus base-pay reduction (he'll make it up in bonus, maybe.)

Gas to get to our jobs now 150 plus per week (and our cars get 28MPG, each)

I bitterly* miss 20 dollar fill-ups.

Groceries are through the roof and the Amazonian daughters of the Elena family are both growing athletes who burn a trillion calories per day.

* bonus point for using "bitter"

I can't add anything more to what everyone else has.

8. It's 106 outside and I have not turned on the a/c.
A fill-up costs $60+. I never drive anywhere unless I have at least 2 places to go.

I used to eat out a few times a week. Now I don't unless I have a coupon or get a AAA discount.

10. My mental recession
running out of food before payday. I guess I'll just imagine food in the pantry and tell my kids it's all in their head when they tell me they're hungry.

I'm not joking here, how I wish I were.

11. Austerity Inc.
My gal and I have been living in a state of forced austerity for three years. The discomfort of counting pennies and eagerly taking home any freebie we can get at our workplaces is made up for with the satisfaction of ownership of our small house and a reasonable mortgage.

But because we have already been living close to the edge, I think that we're better equipped to deal with the current spiral of capitalist chaos.

All the same, this is no mental state, and Phil Gramm, PhD in economics or not, is woefully ignorant of the typical American's plight. That said:

You know you're in a mental recession when heating oil prices, *mid-summer*, are out of your range, and you can only wonder how much per gallon it's going to be come November.

16. I have it as well
Edited on Thu Jul-10-08 04:26 PM by Christa
Well, I damn well deserve my mental recession and my whining, because:

My husband's Wall street job was outsourced to India and we have not had an income for 16 months. He received unemployment for 13 weeks and that was it.

Gas is more than $4 per gallon, he sometimes drives from here to Virginia or to Atlanta for interviews (We live in Charlotte, NC) - and then he does not even get the position he applies for. He has been told that up to 5,000 applications are received per day.

So I have psychological problems? YOU BET!!

At the moment we expect a job offer from a company in Atlanta, Georgia. We will only be too grateful if he gets it, even if it means 75% travel and we will almost never see each other. We are living off our retirement savings, so guess who will never be able to retire?? We are the lucky ones, many don't even have savings.

Oh, but it's all in my head :eyes:

Every second house in Charlotte has a for sale sign, all of them must be experiencing the same psychological problems.

18. It's dangerous to my state of mind knowing some of my fellow
New Englanders will freeze to death this winter because heating oil is dangerously close to $5 a gallon. Maybe Phil Gramm's got a beach house somewhere we can use over the cold, winter months.
