Recently, followers of Fred Phelp’s Westboro Church announced they were planning a “gospel picket” to celebrate the death of a pregnant soldier, 23-year-old Army Spc. Megan Touma. The fundamentalist church claims “war casualties are divine revenge for America tolerating gays and lesbians.” The AP reports that Ft. Bragg military wives are organizing to oppose Westboro’s “plan to celebrate the death of a pregnant dead soldier.” Westboro Church followers have protested against victims of the Minneapolis bridge collapse and picketed dozens of funerals with messages such as “Thank God For AIDS.”

7. I live in Phelps territory

Topeka is only 70 miles from here. Phelps and his clan are here a lot. Most of the time when we have major events we can depend on them being there. Shopping center grand openings, season opener sports events, etc, he is probably there. Not as much lately but he does have a history of showing up at events that draw a lot of people.

And maybe because this has been going on so long, this entire community just ignores them. I honestly see more conversations about Phelps here on DU than I see out in my community or in Topeka. Our media ignores them. Topeka's media ignores them. I can't even remember the last time I saw a newspaper article or an item on the local news about Fred. Our local governments largely ignore them and have stopped trying to pass anti-free speech ordinances directed at Phelps. A year or so ago Phelps was at a funeral right up the street from my house and I had no idea until I drove by that he was there. And let me tell you it was a beautiful site to sit at the light at that corner and watch car after car drive by, pedestrians walk by, bicyclists ride by and no one paid one second of attention to Fred and his clan.

Fred Phelps thrives on attention. That's why he does what he does. And as soon as he realized that here in Kansas he was being ignored, he started traveling around the country and the world to get that attention he craves. And since he keeps coming back, that attention is working.

I also know that Fred and his people monitor discussion boards. They are in fact fairly internet savvy. So I really hate to see your comment because I know they will see it and you will be giving them exactly what they want.

I realize you are a mod and I am just a member but I would like to ask you to consider taking your post down. Don't feed the monster. Thanks for at least listening. :hi:
