4. key economic advisor to McCain, frmr Sen Phil Gramm
said in an interview that the economy was fine, and that the problem is not an economic recession but a psychological problem and the fault of the media - and that the nation is one of whiners (complaining about how bad the economy is as if there is no real issue of rising gas and food prices, stagnant wages, exponential growth in foreclosures, etc.)

34. Is he channeling Maggie Thatcher?
Sounds very much the sort of thing she said; though she tended to call whining 'whingeing'.

http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/07/10/mccain-gramm-does-not-speak-for-me/
<snip>
“You’ve heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession,” he told the Washington Times in an interview published Thursday. He said that growth is about 1% despite publicity over losing jobs to India and China as well as illegal immigration, housing foreclosures and other problems.

“We have sort of become a nation of whiners,” he said. “You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, American in decline.” This, he said, despite an increase in exports that is fueling growth.

22. Thanks for the links
This site does help when one falls out of the loop.

I do remember seeing the mental recession remark somewhere but missed the whiners comment. What idiots.
They think they can say this shit and the economy woes will go away.

6. We have a "mental recession" and are whining about it.
The economy is fine, and the Nation is stronger than ever. Phil Gramm spewed a bunch of elitist bullshit, and the media actually noticed!

Edited on Fri Jul-11-08 06:56 AM by SpiralHawk
who should shut up, sit down, and let the Republicon Homelander Plutocracy put on diapers, sulk, and screw the US economy, environment, and Constitution as if they were whores. Then when the republicons are done, they want to accuse the victims of their Evil Doing & incompetency: whiney.

But this republicon skankitude shall not stand.

The honest citizens of the USA deserve much better than the corupt & amoral republicon-homelander elitism.

And if the stellar media would do its f'in job and expose Gramm's involvement in Enron and the housing crisis more of the 'mythical little people' would wake up to how they've been had by a bunch of immoral, greedy crooks and all hell would begin to break loose, IMO. :hi:

But then maybe I spoke too soon.

I have to admit, each day Gramps and his surrogates dig their graves deeper...we may not even need to buy spots, just invite his surrogates to an open mike and let them make even bigger fools of themselves.

Now quit whinning!

10. They Can't Help Him...It's Not Working
With three months of the field all to himself and the corporate media in the tank, you'd think Gramps should have a double digit lead in the polls. However, the other day TPM hit on something I am starting to see. Gramps is the worst candidate I've seen in my lifetime and that his "straight talk" bullshit isn't working anymore. That the "cute" statements like these are coming to often, gramps has no control of the facts and all the turmoil in his campaign is starting to take a toll on both the candidate and the campaign.

If anything, the more the corporate media attempts to hide Gramps' warts...like Gramm and Black and Farina and others, the more all of them are toasting each other.

Cheers...

There's the "nuts" story..."lead editorial"?

It's so amusing that many of these people who said others (I assume that means Democrats) are whinners yet no sooner do they spew, then they start bitiching. I guess that should have been the word used.

I haven't done a talk show in a while...my fun was to "truth squad" hate radio stations...especially in areas where I don't live...freak out the host on how someone from Chicago could be hearing his little 500 watt station...then have some fun.

I'd be too tempted to ask Peter about how is his good friend Jeff Gannon.

25. This dolt should look up the term "Tchotchke Economy" . . .
All these Republistupids can rah rah about low prices all they want; all they're doing is cheering on what Paul Krugman referred to as a "Tchotchke economy". That's where the prices on toys (Tchotchkes) such as DVDs, phones, computers, appliances and other devices like that are as cheap as they are low quality, yet the prices on necessities (utilities, homes, education, health care, social services) grow in cost to the point where they end up being insurmountable to the average consumer.

In 1970, the average home price was only twice that of an average family income. In 2007, that average house is now 4-10 times the family income, which has moved a pittance in real dollars since 1970. That's not even counting the fact that we work longer hours on average than our 70s counterparts, due to the fact that most of us are two-income families (often without a choice in the matter, since no amount of budgeting will result in affordability). The same can probably be said of education and health care as well, for those not lucky enough to have an employer provide those benefits. Even still, you don't really have a choice of what you want to study and health care takes a substantial chunk of your weekly pay no matter what.

18. This has been the neo-con tactic from the beginning, blaming the victim!
Remember how O'Reilly, Coulter, Limbaugh, and the rest blamed Katrina victims for not getting out in time? "We will export your jobs, deny you health coverage, raise your gasoline and food prices, raise our own salaries just because we can, and, if you have a problem with it, YOU are guilty of 'class envy'!"

19. As usual WJ missed the point.....
...The "whiner" comment isn't what people were upset at. Gramm said that the problems with the economy are "mental". This is outrageous. Happy talk is not going to fix this mess. Happy talk is what got us into this mess. Still, the media continue to write stories along the lines of: "Have we reached the bottom?". "Is the economy about to turn the corner?". NO, GODDAMIT! It is about to collapse in a big stinking pile of wreckage, largely brought about by the same Phil Gramm and his brilliant plan to deregulate the banking and commodities industries and loot the public for every last dime that they have. As for the callers on WJ, is it me, or are they getting wackier by the day - the rethugs, that is?

23. Well If You're Not Rich, It's Your Fault
That's been the GOOP mantra for years. It's the party for those with money or those who want it...and if you're a good sheeple, the big boys might just throw you a bone now and then...and be happy with it!

I wouldn't doubt that things are going very well for Gramm right now. He got insider trading info months ago and probably has a lot of money riding on oil and energy speculation...so quit yer whinnin'. Hell, if you had the money lying around, wouldn't you do it, too? :sarcasm:

The corporate media doesn't get it cause they're in a bubble, too. Few have had to worry about their paychecks...and even if they get things wrong, they're always promoted. They see us "whiners" as rabble...the great unwashed. And when they do report on the hardships people feel, there's always a GOOP mouthpiece to say how this is a "hit job" by the "librul" media.

Remember, if the GOOP admits the economy is bad, then they have to admit who made it that way. Right now they're trying to pin that on the Democratic Congress.
