McCain was still married to his wife when he got married to his mistress
John Aravosis (DC) · 7/11/2008 09:50:00 AM ET

Why does the Los Angeles Times hate America?. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-divorce11-2008jul11,0,6546861.story They're mean. John McCain was tortured in Vietnam. So stop talking about his credibility. You can only ask Barack Obama questions about his credibility, and his patriotism, about whether his preacher loves America and whether Obama has a personal problem with the American flag. But don't ask John McCain anything because John McCain is a hero. Even though now we find out that our hero was still living with his wife when he started dating his mistress. It gets even better: McCain was still legally married to his first wife when he got a marriage license for his second wife. I guess adultery and bigamy aren't such a big deal anymore with "family values" leaders like Ohio's Phil Burress who are now supporting McCain. And in any case, they were youthful indiscretions - McCain was only in his 40s at the time. In political reinvention terms, that's practically puberty.

An examination of court documents tells a different story. McCain did not sue his wife for divorce until Feb. 19, 1980, and he wrote in his court petition that he and his wife had "cohabited" until Jan. 7 of that year -- or for the first nine months of his relationship with Hensley.

Although McCain suggested in his autobiography that months passed between his divorce and remarriage, the divorce was granted April 2, 1980, and he wed Hensley in a private ceremony five weeks later. McCain obtained an Arizona marriage license on March 6, 1980, while still legally married to his first wife.

1. How is this scum bag even considered for any office,
much less keeper of the football?

"Conservatives" are mindless fools.

2. Andrew Jackson went through a similar morass when he married Rachel.
They both thought she was divorced, but they were mistaken.

Well there is a slight difference here...
...there is no indication that McCain was confused, only that he was jumping the gun, so to speak...

17. Apparently what happened was...
...he was granted a divorce by his Vietnamese torturers, or didn't you hear he was held captive for five and a half years in a Vietnamese prison camp?

makes perfect sense that they lied to each other about their marital status too, wouldn't it?

10. actually, in az, does obtaining a "marriage license" really mean they're married at that point?
i think some states use the term "marriage license" to mean the application for marriage, and some other term for the actual marriage.

anyone know the process in arizona?

16. or will be on the date you indicate the actual marriage is to take place?
someone should be able to dig up the actual state form that was in use at the time, if not a copy of his actual license.

21. It sure was the two times I've gotten one!
And I can't imagine red Arizona is any more lenient with that requirement that red-but-turning-blue Virginia.

We had to raise our hands and SWEAR AN OATH that we weren't already married (along w/all the other info on the form being true). If it's the same in AZ, did John McCain lie under oath?

25. in AZ you do not need to produce a divorce decree to get a marriage license
Edited on Fri Jul-11-08 06:29 PM by onenote
and the license is good for a year.

I don't know if it asks the applicants to attest in any way to their current marital status but the marriage license statute doesn't require it.

There was a time, when I would have loved to have had a woman to cozy up to, who owned a beer distributorship, or even a nice night club/saloon.

WHO's PEGGY?

18. So the only difference between a wing-nut and democrat is that when a wing-nut has an extra-marital
affair, it's ok as long as they divorce their wife and remarry, whereas when a democrat does it and actually tries to save his marriage and remains married, they are regarded as immoral. So in order for it NOT to be immoral, you have to actually LEAVE your wife and marry your mistress. Is that about right?

19. I've said it before and I'll say it again
As much as I'd love to crucify McCain on his affair, it is not an issue that is going to fix the economy or bring our troops home from Iraq. Obama took a stand against wedge issues in the primary and I expect him to follow through in the general.

:sarcasm:

The Republicans have so much family values that they have families with multiple women. The only one out of the top-polling presidential candidates with one wife was the fucking Mormon.

There is plenty to nail McCain on without making shit up. And its pretty clear that his divorce was final before he married his current wife.
