6. Pit Bulls when raised properly and well trained are
excellent dogs.

Unfortunately, some owners buy these dogs because of their bad reputation and plan to use them as guard dogs. The breed of dog used for this purpose often is determined by the current fad. Years ago, the Doberman Pinscher had the reputation that the Pit Bull has today.

According to the National Canine Research Council, there are 3 main factors that contribute to creating dangerous dogs and at least 1 of these 3 factors was present in over 90% of fatal dog attacks over the last 3 years. The 3 factors are:

1. The dog is not spayed or neutered.
2. The dog is not properly cared for (for example, the dog is abused, neglected, chained, or allowed to roam).
3. The dog is not kept as a family pet (but instead as a guard dog, status symbol, “yard dog,” etc.).

The media knows that the public loves stories about violent Pit Bull dogs and will focus on stories about this breed while ignoring stories about other breeds attacking people.

Pit Bull dogs are not the easiest dog to train and probably not the best dog for a new dog owner unless he is willing to take the dog through a good dog obedience course.

7. please don't hate an entire variety of dog baselessly..
pit bulls become dangerous and aggressive ONLY when:

A. They are trained and conditioned to be so OR
B. They are so inbred that the genetic tendency for aggressive behavior is multiplied.

I've had dogs all my life, I've known many, many dog owners, I've worked with rescue organizations and my mother ran a shelter. We can definitively say that only a mere handful of dogs are "born bad" and can't be rehabilitated. You know right away by their body language how to distinguish fear from hate.

9. ....
The stuff about the body language... I have to say from experience that this isn't always the case, as a golden retriever trotted up to me one day, tail wagging and acting playful... I slowly reached down to pet him and he bit the shit out of me.

I've heard pit bulls, like cocker spaniels, are prone to mental illness.

10. again, inbreeding.
Cocker spaniels are notoriously inbred, and also smaller dogs are given greater leeway in aggressive behavior because they are not seen as dangerous due to their stature. Give me any popular breed, and I will find a well-documented genetic problem with it, physical or behavioral. Many if not most breeders, even well-respected ones whose dogs win prestigious prizes, practice what is known as "line-breeding" which is just a cover term for inbreeding. The degree of closeness of relationship between the bitch and the dog varies among breed recommendations based on the number of foundation lines. However, no matter how much language dresses it up, all purebred dogs are inbred to a considerable degree.

Inbreeding is a major problem, and as a result I have pledged to never buy a purebred dog. Here I live in Argentina, the breeding clubs are pushing for a ban on basset hound breeding, because a great many of them become extremely arthritic in middle age due to the length of their spine combined with their relatively dense bone structure.

And you will never know why that retriever bit you, perhaps he was abused and your hand came down too fast. It's a good idea to not make eye contact and try to pet any unfamiliar animal without the go-ahead from the owner.

4. I can't make myself even open the link.... my imagination
is bad enough...

I just can't take it....Whatever horrible thing happened, may the dog go to an eternal "doggy paradise" and may the human perpetrator face the worst of his karma, without delay.

11. You'll note from the article
that it appears this example of a naturally vicious and overly aggressive breed :eyes: has been a very good patient, even in such pain.

I hope that the individual(s) responsible are caught and given the appropriate punishment.

12. .
I'm going to give my dog an EXTRA hug today.

I've known a few pitbulls, and had one pound puppy pit-mix myself; gentle, loving dogs all.

It says a lot about humans, that the dog is patient and cooperative when suffering excruciating pain caused by human hate.

16. Abusing animals and setting fires
are two of the three triads of becoming a serial killer. The third would be wetting the bed.
