Dean: "GOP had a ‘let em’ eat cake’ attitude last eight years".. "disdain" for ordinary Americans
Howard Dean has been in Maine the last few days, organizing and doing voter outreach. He was also in Portsmouth, NH, today.

Republicans have disdain for ordinary Americans

Former Texas Sen. Gramm told the Washington Times editorial board that the economic downturn was more psychological than real and that Americans were complaining too much. Despite McCain’s disavowal of Gramm’s comments, Dean said they represented GOP attitudes under President Bush.

“Republicans have disdain for ordinary Americans,” Dean said before arriving for a campaign stop in Portsmouth Friday. “They’ve had a ‘let em’ eat cake’ attitude for the last eight years and want four more of it with McCain.”

..."Dean’s visit did not go unnoticed by state Republicans who criticized his “past hysterical statements” and criticism of presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain.

“New Hampshire voters have made John McCain the winner of two primaries in this state precisely because of his integrity and courage to do what is right for this country,” said Fergus Cullen, chairman of the state Republicans, in a statement. “While Barack Obama talks about getting away from ‘slash and burn politics,’ the Chairman of his own party continues to slash away without any sense of hypocrisy. New Hampshire voters deserve some answers from Howard Dean on his visit here.”

Dean said he wasn’t surprised by the tone of the greeting.

“Personal attacks is what the Republicans do,” Dean said. “It didn’t work in 2006, and it won’t work in 2008. Americans are looking for real change and Barack Obama represents the future. John McCain represents the past.”

Dean calls for young voters to step up

Calling this year’s process a “generational election,” Dean encouraged young people to go door to door to encourage others to vote for Democrats, specifically Presidential candidate Barack Obama and U.S. Senate candidate Tom Allen.

“There are a lot of people who have given up on Republicans and haven’t voted for awhile...” Dean said. “There are older people who are disillusioned, who have been promised a lot of things by politicians over the years, and now they’re paying $4.25 a gallon for gas and drive 50 miles to their jobs in northern Maine. They’re really suffering.”

10. A DFA blog write-up about another Portsmouth visit by Dean
This is by Marcia Moody of the NH legislature.

Dean in Portsmouth

Howard was there to tell us all how important it was to return all these good Democrats back to office in November and to elect Barack Obama as the next President. He talked about McCain's total lack of understanding of the the economic crisis we are facing. He mentioned how people in Berlin, NH have lost thousands of jobs because of the closing of the lunber mills. Now those people have to drive over 50 miles one way just to find work with gas prices at $4 plus a gallon. However, his two big issues were to get the young people involved and the neighbor-to-neighbor door knocking campaign. He told us how as Chairman of the DNC, they decided to try an experiment in the 2006 Virginia election. He said, "As a good doctor, I wanted control groups." There were six. First, the dreaded robo-calls, then the personal calls, the targeted mailings, the targeted TV and radio ads, the college kids knocking on doors. and finally the neighbor-to-neighbor group knocking on doors.

He said that all groups showed a 1% to 2% increase in voter turnout and results, but one group in particular...the neighbor-toneighbor group had a 12% increase. That is so significant. That is why he said it is so important for us to participate in that program. He turned to our State Party Chairman, Ray Buckley and Ray said that here in NH we have 1,500 people signed up for the program. Then Howard said when they first came out with this concept, which consists of you knocking on 25 of your neighbor's doors at least 3 times between now and November, people in Oregon accepted the challenge and said that they would do even better, knocking on 40 doors 4 times.
