T Boon Pickens... who is this guy and why am I seeing him EVERYWHERE?
Edited on Sat Jul-12-08 12:01 PM by mckeown1128
I did a wikipedia search on him and it said he has some "plan" to ..I guess... build wind turbines across the country and he is spending 58 million bucks on "advertising" it.

But I've seen that he has been interviewed on Fox...which gives me reservations.. does anyone know anything else about this guy???

Edit: I just read this article, here are some highlights:

He's already enlisted an unlikely supporter: the Sierra Club. "I will be in the front row of the chorus cheering" him on, says Carl Pope, its executive director, who flew with Pickens to Sweetwater.

Pope sees wind and solar energy as inexpensive sources of power that, along with other non-carbon forms, can be pooled to greatly reduce the need for oil- and coal-fired electric-generating plants.

Getting support from groups and people not ordinarily aligned with his conservative political views is important to Pickens. A lifelong Republican, he'll vote for McCain. But he's not involved with McCain's campaign, largely to keep his plan from being dismissed as mere campaign rhetoric.

"This has to be a bipartisan effort," says the man who four years ago offered $1 million to anyone who could disprove the charges made against Democrat nomine Sen. John Kerry by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

So...he's a big conservative guy...but is getting the backing of Sierra club people?!

3. listen closely to his ad
it's about wind power, sure, but it's also about ending dependency on foreign oil...i.e. developing national resources...including oil and gas...it's a clever way to get Americans to let the energy companies do whatever they need here to end imports...snake oil

16. Jimmy Carter was advocating the same thing
He warned about transferring our wealth to foreigners with our dependence on foreign oil. During his admistration, we began research into solar power, wind power, and sythetic fuel. At that time our balance of payments was still positive. After Reagan was elected, all these programs were cut back or eliminated and that is why we are in the fix we are in today.

* he has worked against environmental causes for years (such as global warming)

* Given millions to the right wing

* His ads now are about using natural gas in cars instead of gasoline .... Pickens

12. T Boone is all about T Boone
As far as his plan .... I don't know ..... just his name
linked to something makes me a little "hinky."

But lots of people have been talking Solar & Wind for years ....
T. Boone would have seen these people as the enemy ... if he
is in it it must be because he can make money.

9. He is a very sharp entrepeneur, owns an oil company, and is very rich. Apparently he wants to shift
...energy sources away from oil.

That would be opposed to the Cheney Energy Policy of not stopping until every last drop of oil is raped from the Earth and ignoring global warming, peak oil, and other dire consequences.

Look for Dick Cheney to invite Pickens to go "duck hunting" with him sometime soon.

10. Extremely Wealthy Hedge Fund Manager, Oilman, and Political Guy
For some reason he is putting a great deal of money into commericals tellling everyone that we need to look for other sources of energy other than oil. I do not have a problem with Pickens doing that, but I do wonder about his motives. I just wonder if he is doing this for some underhanded reason other than the fact that he might make a great deal of money, as someone has suggested that Pickens may be heavily invested in alternative energy now. In addition, I wonder if all of the information Pickens put in that commerical is accurate. At one point in the commerical he states that America will spend $600 billion dollars for foreign oil which is more than 6 times the entire cost of the Iraq War. As far as I know that would mean the entire Iraq war has cost $100 billion. As far as I know the Iraq War has cost more than $100 billion. Maybe I keep hearing the commerical wrong or maybe my math is wrong.

11. Sceptical about Pickens
I believe that his project is a cover for the oil industry's intention to go all out with natural gas exploration and extraction on American soil. He promotes natural gas driven cars in large scale. I live in the Rocky Mountains and the oil companies are itching to gain access to our land for natural gas extraction. I am leery about his plans and his attempts to sway public opinion.

Think Daniel Plainview without the alcohol.

I promise, if Boone is involved, no matter what he promises, he will drink your milkshake.

15. Oilman and Hedge Funds.
HUGH money. HUGH.

I met up with his daughter in DC around 1982 and she was dressed like something out of a fashion runway. Nice enough person, but had no idea what the struggles of kids just out of college were like. Never wore the same thing twice.

So much money, it is impossible to comprehend.

19. He's This Election Year's, "THE GOP IS NOW GREEN" Poster Boy
If you trust a lifelong Republican, feel free.

He doesn't pass my sniff test.

And why is he so vocal about it now, a few months before we pick a president?

I guarantee you he will string these ads out, then endorse McCain and tell us how anti-green the Dems are.

The wolf in sheep's clothes.
