Chipping away at privacy chips also chips away at reproductive rights
Edited on Sat Jul-12-08 05:48 PM by mdmc
1) I don't care about FISA - freedom has been dead in America well before 2000.
but...

The legal right to abortion is grounded in our fundamental right to privacy. A women's right to reproductive health can be directly traced back to 1965 - Griswald v. CT - which gave single people the right to the same reproductive rights that married people enjoyed at the time. The issue was one of privacy.

So while I know President Bush and his cronies, or (after 1-20-09) President Obama and his cronies, won't be going after my privacy with the FISA compromise, it does chip away at freedoms that we all currently enjoy.

Once privacy is subverted in favor of security, a slippery slope has begun. I can think of quite a few rights that might need to be curbed in the name of security.
But some good news -
(the way I see it) Gun ownership might be the next right that needs to be curbed. Will it go out with a whimper (like our civil liberties) or will it go out with a fight?

I am almost excited to find out.
