2002:

We Are Sleepwalking Into A Reckless War Of Aggression

by Seumas Milne
September 27, 2002

The world is now undergoing a crash course of political education in the new realities of global power. In case anyone was still in any doubt about what they might mean, the Bush doctrine (set out last Friday in the US National Security Strategy) laid bare the ground rules of the new imperium. The US will in future brook no rival in power or military prowess, will spread still further its network of garrison bases in every continent, and will use its armed might to promote a "single sustainable model for national success" (its own), through unilateral pre-emptive attacks if necessary.

2008:

Congress Rushes to Encourage Iran Attack
by Gary Leupp
June 28, 2008

On October 11, 2002, the Senate passed the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution. It did so influenced by what anyone paying attention now knows was a campaign of fear-mongering lies organized by the neocons surrounding Vice President Cheney.

The Congress is about to repeat that disgraceful performance. House Resolution 362, which Rep. Ron Paul properly calls “just more war propaganda” will likely come to the floor and pass after the July 4 recess. It positively encourages George W. Bush, whom you might suppose is the most discredited U.S. president in the country’s history and the most inclined to take vicious irrational military action, to take actions which would constitute a declaration of war on Iran.

Recall the Lennon/McCartney lyric: “Turn off your mind, relax and float downstream…” Maybe that’s what they’re doing, these politicians. Maybe they’re sleepwalking towards war with Iran.

How does Bush sleep at night? Apparently, quite well

“I must tell you, I’m sleeping a lot better than people would assume,” he said.

I’m not sure what possessed Bush to say such a thing. The implication seems to be that he imagines most Americans look at unraveling world events and global crises and think, “Boy, I bet this is the kind of stuff that would keep a president up at night.” To which Bush seems to suggest, “Nope, everything’s fine here!”

Even as far as public perceptions are concerned, it’s the kind of comment that reinforces the worst suspicions about the man. Given what we’ve seen over the last several years, it seems Bush is oddly detached, living in a bubble of his own creation, sealed off from the reality-based world.

6. Saber-Rattling Is Sleep-Walking America To War
Byrd: Senate’s ‘Saber-Rattling’ Is ‘Sleep-Walking’ America To War With Iran

Byrd added that the Senate’s “chest-pounding” and “saber-rattling” towards Iran was “deeply troubling,” as the Iraq war has shown “all too clearly where it leads”:

It is deeply troubling to see the U.S. Senate joining the chest-pounding and saber-rattling of the Bush administration. I am no apologist for the Iranian regime, anymore than I was for Saddam Hussein, but I fear that we may become entangled in another bloody quagmire. We have been down this path before. We have seen all too clearly where it leads.

We are truly “sleepwalking through history.” In my heart of hearts I pray that this great nation and its good and trusting citizens are not in for a rudest of awakenings.

8. Bolton: US should help Israel attack Iran
"We will be blamed for the strike anyway, and certainly feel whatever negative consequences result, so there is compelling logic to make it as successful as possible," Bolton said in a Wall Street Journal editorial on Tuesday.

10. from Vietnam to Iraq
John McCain's Chilling Project for America

This long analysis, by Elliot Cohen, was published by World Can't Wait, June 19, 2008.

John McCain has long been a major player in a radical militaristic group driven by an ideology of global expansionism and dominance attained through perpetual, pre-emptive, unilateral, multiple wars. The credo of this group is "the end justifies the means," and the end of establishing the United States as the world's sole superpower justifies, in its estimation, anything from military control over the information on the Internet to the use of genocidal biological weapons. Over its two terms, the George W. Bush administration has planted the seeds for this geopolitical master plan, and now appears to be counting on the McCain administration, if one comes to power, to nurture it.
