3. What's the dilemma? Fred Phelps has NO redeeming qualities at all...

During their teenage years, both Mark and Nate worked as law clerks in their father's office. "When a black client was in there," recalls Nate, "my father would play the 'DN' game with us. Mark definitely recalls that his father taught the Ham story and took it to its Calvinist conclusions: the black race was cursed and meant to be the "servants of servants" - i.e., subservient to whites. Peters is the guru-philosopher of the Christian Identity Movement. Known simply as "Identity", the movement believes the white race is God's true Chosen People. They assert the Jews are animal souls that rewrote the Old Testament to give themselves the Chosen's birthright. Blacks are "mud people" who also possess animal souls-meaning they are not immortal and cannot go to heaven. According to Identity, blacks and Jews want to eliminate the white race and rule the earth.

Nothing he could *ever* do would redeem him. So he wants to trash Tony Snow and disrupt his funeral... and that makes him a good guy somehow? Some people are just able to run on hate most of their lives and live to a ripe old age like Phelps, Jesse Helms, etc. when such a lifestyle would send others off to an early grave. We'll see if his offspring, offsprings' offspring, offsprings' offsprings' offspring, etc. are able to do so as well. Also, there may not be anyone else in the Phelps' clan who is able to hold them all together like Fred does. Even when he does kick off, I think it will take a while for their compound to dissolve, and even if his great-grandkids who have had their pictures taken with "God Hates Fags" t-shirts on move away when they get older, there's still going to be a tradition of homosexual-hating going on. I can also easily imagine scenarios where when some of the kids do move out when they get older, and if they in turn have a kid who grows up to reject the hatred, that he'll be ostracized by his or her parents, and that branch of the family will be ostracized for having a "fag-lover."

In the Bible there's a lot of cursing of families to the 7th generation, and I think they'll be living with a curse they created for themselves for at least that long before the hatred is diluted even to the point where hating homosexuals is maybe number 5 or 6 on their list of political concerns behind high gas prices, the economy, etc. instead of big ol' numero uno like it is now.

But as long as he mainly attacked the forces opposed to it, or the troops who they secretly despise, the regime was content to ignore Phelps, as he appealed to the sadistic side of Bush's followers, and sucked all the air out of the room on topics such as gay rights. Furthermore, Phelps made Bush look good, because, Bush wasn't Phelps. Now Phelps has turned on one of the Bush inner circle, a true believer and good soldier, who valiantly sacrificed his health for the regime CYA.
