1. Interesting question
The cover itself is already sort of a Mad Magazine type of spoof of what the lies the Right has spoon fed themselves. Not sure how you spoof a spoof when a lot of people didn't get it in the first place.

5. Well, then they need to do a McCain 'satire' also.
Let's see, in a wheel chair, devilish grin on his face, wife using drugs, confused about where he is, calling his wife a c**t, causing a fire on the aircraft carrier, signing a confession in captivity, big fence around his home keeping out immigrants etc. Hard to fit that all in one drawing but I'm sure that they can do it, if they want to.

6. the satire isnt about the candidate. its about the frivolity and stupidity
of the arguments the media creates around them.

7. We're in a Presidential campaign. That cover will be copied throughout the RW world.
It 'humorously' reinforces many stereotypes that some people have about the Obamas.

8. i think anyone who takes the whole obama is a muslim terrorist thing seriously
will anyhow NEVER vote for obama, whether or not the new yorker satirizes it.

10. True but it's the more undecided voter who could be influenced.
It's a way to define the Obamas in a negative light. I guess I come down on the side of free speech but the magazine needs to balance this with a McCain piece. Why focus only on the Obamas?

12. because the satire wasnt about obama. it satirizes the media
since the media give a free pass to mccain, and republicans in general, the aim of the satire would be lost if it were to focus on mccain

21. I think MAD should do the same cartoon
but fill it with leftist / liberal leanings.

Michelle would have a "free tibet" sign.

Obama would be dresed like Uncle Sam, complete with ACLU card.

BinLaden would be replaced with Jerry Garcia, or RFK.

23. The NY'er could do a mccain one
"Maverick"

Ms. McCain would be baking cookies for poor kids. McCain would be jailing the neo-con chickenhawks. A picture of Jimmy Carter (Best President Ever) would grace the wall.
