Is the position of senator greater in prestige than that of governor? |
|
What determines the answer? I suppose big states like California or New York are pretty rewarding governorships.
How common is job swapping between Senate and Governorships in either direction?

I think a Senator has more prestige because they actually make & |
|
change the Federal Laws that affect the whole country, a Governor can only affect the laws in his State.

1. Senate is more prestigious. Governors have appointed themselves to the senate before. |
|
A senator dies. The state governor gets to appoint the senator to serve until the next election for that seat. Occasionally, a governor will appoint himself to the senate, then vacate the governorship.
There are a handful of governorships that would be more prestigious, but even so, governors don't usually have any national standing.

4. Kay Bailey doesn't want to hang around in minority party status in the senate ... |
|
... and she's got a good shot at winning governor, so that's her motivation.
Ahnold wants a national office, and has been governor.
KBH wants out of the senate because she's been there a good while, and it looks like the GOP won't run the senate any time soon. It's not a matter of the prestige of the governship, so much as it is avoiding hanging around the senate when Dems are running the show.

2. In our new system of government, the Senate, like the House, |

seems largely ceremonial.
