Kucinich Says Unidentified Foreign Official Wants to Speak at Impeachment Talks

An unidentified government official of a U.S. ally wants to participate if and when Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich makes his case to impeach President Bush before the House Judiciary Committee, according to the Ohio Democrat.

The House voted, 238-180, on Tuesday to send Kucinich’s latest impeachment effort (H Res 1345) to the Judiciary Committee.

Chairman John Conyers Jr. said he will hold a broad hearing on the general topic of abuses of power by the Bush administration.

“There’s never been one that accumulated all the things that constitute an imperial presidency,” Conyers said, explaining that the anticipated hearing would review more than a year of committee inquiry into such matters as the firing of U.S. attorneys, the leak of the identity of former CIA operative Valerie Plame and the information provided to Congress in the run-up to the Iraq War.

Kucinich contends that President Bush ought to be impeached for allegedly lying to Congress in order to get approval to invade Iraq.

Conyers does not intend to specifically debate or hold a committee vote on Kucinich’s article of impeachment, though issues important to Kucinich would get a public airing.

A ‘New Angle’
No matter how the eventual hearing is framed, Kucinich said he would like to be joined at the witness table by a foreign official he would not name.

“I’ve been contacted by representatives of a U.S. ally who are seeking an opportunity to appear before the Judiciary Committee,” he said in an interview.

“Legislative leaders of a foreign capital” have a “new angle that I haven’t thought of before but is relevant,” he

Bush Threatened Nations That Did Not Back Iraq War

By Agence France Presse

09/26/07 "AFP" -- -- US President George W. Bush threatened nations with retaliation if they did not vote for a UN resolution backing the Iraq war, according to a transcript published Wednesday of a conversation he had with former Spanish prime minister Jose Maria Aznar.

In the transcript of a meeting on February 22, 2003 — a month before the US-led invasion of Iraq — published in the El Pais daily, Bush tells Aznar that nations like Mexico, Angola, Chile and Cameroon must know that the security of the United States is at stake.

He says during the meeting on his ranch in Texas that Angola stood to lose financial aid while Chile could see a free trade agreement held up in the US Senate if they did not back the resolution, the left-wing paper said.

The confidential transcript was prepared by Spain’s ambassador to the United States at the time, Javier Ruperez, the paper said.

Prior to the US-led invasion of Iraq on March 20, 2003, Washington unsuccessfully lobbied the 15 members of the UN Security Council for a second resolution paving the way for military action against Iraq if Saddam Hussein failed to comply with demands to disarm.

But during the meeting with Aznar, Bush made it clear the US would invade Iraq by the end of March 2003 whether or not there was a UN resolution to authorize it, El Pais reported.

“We have to get rid of Saddam. There are two weeks left. In two weeks we will be ready militarily. We will be in Baghdad at the end of March,” Bush said in the transcript which was translated into Spanish by the newspaper.

Victory would come “without destruction”, he added.

The meeting between Aznar and Bush came just days after a massive protest in Madrid by more than a million people against the invasion which Aznar’s conservative government backed.

Aznar tells Bush in the transcript that he needed Washington’s help to get Spanish public opinion behind the invasion. He adds that he is worried by Bush’s optimism.

“I am optimistic because I believe I am right. I am at peace with myself,” Bush responded.

Maybe Aznar is still mad about W. misprouncing his name?

while he is a compelling speaker, he doesn't have credibility with the us media. Someone on the international scene who would be reported on in the us as someone significant would be the only way it would have any effect.

George Galloway eats infotainers (those who pretend to be real journalists) for breakfast. Anyway, he would be speaking to the American people, not shithead infotainers. Fuck them. Who give a shit what they say and think. Hardly anyone I know, including republicans/conservatives, thinks we have real 'news' on TV anymore.

investigate the facts, who refuse tobelieve that their government and their media will routinely lie to them and fabricate a reality contrary to verifiable facts, is a society that chooses and deserves the Police State Dictatorship it's going to get." -- Ian Williams Goddard

We need a real witness - Someone with really big, pretty tits, if only to keep their attention for three minutes at a time.

Alternatively, some dude with tons of junk and really tight pants, if the Republics need to be distracted.

And both, if we're aiming to inform and educate the public. Keep the camera on the panel and the drooling morans won't be re-elected.

and yet he gets no media coverage. I watched the House Clerks read his Articles of Impeachment for Bush on the Count of Illegally lying to Congress read on the House Floor around 5:00 p.m. today. It made me so sad that no one covered it. Hearing each and every offense with documentation brought back memories of all that we who have been here on DU for so long remember reading. We always thought with each new crime that was revealed someone would do something. And, no one ever did except Dennis Kucinich.

But, he's just an elf from Ohio...who cares what he thinks. :-(

So, this is curious. Who did we prop up wo want's to turn state's evidence, even though they're not obligated?

Could it be that someone just wants to see justice done? Or future injustice prevented?

Not a real familiar name BUT, He has been at pertinant locations throughout.
He was UK Ambassador to UN in 2002-03.? living in NY. Then although he was at retirement age, UK Govt. twisted his arm and got him to take a post in Iraq, during Paul Bremer's tenure, for a year or two.
Then he wrote a book, (it was VERY BRIEFLY mentioned in the blogosphere 2 years ago) But I heard very recently, from a good source that the book was stiffled in Britan. He IS a countryman of Mrs. Kucinich, who herself must have a lot of connections because of her career choices!
He is likely to have an interesting perspective on the situation and a LOT OF KNOWLEDGE.

29. Surely it will be...
An official of a government that was intimately involved in the creation of the causus belli in the runup to the war. Italy would not surprise me, because of their intelligence service's involvement in the false yellowcake documents. If not them, then I have no clue, save, perhaps, someone from the Israeli Government or Britain. But that I doubt.

Sure hope that person brings documents.

Galloway would make for a nice performance, but he is an independent member of Parliament. I doubt he would possess much that was either substantive to the proceedings or that would persuade the committee.

on second thought, after a fuller, more careful reading:

A ‘New Angle’

No matter how the eventual hearing is framed, Kucinich said he would like to be joined at the witness table by a foreign official he would not name.

"I've been contacted by representatives of a U.S. ally who are seeking an opportunity to appear before the Judiciary Committee," he said in an interview.

"Legislative leaders of a foreign capital" have a "new angle that I haven't thought of before but is relevant," he said. "This interest in whether we've been told the truth has extended to other countries."

Kucinich would not provide further detail.

I will go way out on a limb and guess Yukihisa Fujita.

"Legislative leaders of a foreign capital"... "This interest in whether we've been told the truth has extended to other countries."

...certainly fits that description more than anyone else.

Fujita has made a point of traveling to Europe and consulting with his counterparts there. Doesn't seem like he would hesitate to pick up the phone and call Dennis.

33. Here is where the internets and YouTube will play a key role
my friends if you are taping or recording it we must get in on YouTube and it has to go viral....once it's in the realm of viral the media has absolutely no choice but to start covering it.....we have to become the press.

This unidentified official could blow the crimes of this administration through the roof... of this tilting administration....we need to have records of it.

Because the republicon-owned corporate media will cover this only sketchily, and undoubtedly -- as they have in the past -- obfuscate and spin.

"We have to become the press."

Because America no longer has one.

Robin Cook or John Prescott perhaps?

Richard Dearlove was head of MI6 from 1999 until 2004 and Stephen Lander was head of MI5 from 1996 until 2002.

Gordon Brown is too involved in keeping the war going to have anything to do with Dennis I think.

78. I would love to hear that! I SO wanted an indirect reference to Kelly in the movie War, Inc.

I'd have sent John Cusack a case of wine if he had put some sort of indirect (yet obvious) reference on how his character had helped "off" David Kelly.

Anything to bring the true story of what happened here would really perhaps enlighten the public on what was going on.

Might this person perhaps be David Manning (of the David Manning memo)? I know that Vincent Bugliosi is big on the Manning memo being far more part of his case against Bush than the Downing Street memos.

70. since our govt seems to be broken b/c too many dems were complicit
yes, it would appear that the U.S. is no longer able to govern via those in office now unless they are told that if we don't deal with our war criminals other nations will (and this has already been said by Phillip Sands.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1V2XCkGjP5g

here's a discussion with Sands and Col. Wilkerson, who was Powell's chief of staff. Wilkerson knows that Americans do not understand what this nation is about, vis a vis the Constitution.

This govt is broken, imo. This is what we get when rule of law is no longer important to those sworn to uphold it via The Constitution. that's what has made us diff. - we are a nation of laws, not men, supposedly.

65. Phillip Sands is my guess
he's already testified before the Senate. He has a book that lays out the reasons war crimes charges are forthcoming via European nations if we don't deal with these war criminals.

Sands has also proposed "truth and reconciliation" hearings so that those who will name names get immunity... like Pinochet and Chile during his fascist reign. Or like South Africa. That is the way Bush, et al can avoid criminal charges, it seems.

In other words, America either needs to stop believing the Fox News version of events or the Bushies need to face war crimes charges.

The good is having external confirmation and additional information aired publicly.

The bad is the psychological impact of having a foreign official participating in impeachment hearings. The old attitude of "We can fight within the family but don't stand for anyone else fighting with our family". I wonder if something like that would actually detract from the effort.

88. Bet it may be Robin Butler (author of The Butler Report)...
and Philippe Sands. Some serious questioning on what was revealed by Butler's review and the conclusions Britain has reached since might make for some eye-opening testimony.

Don't know if Sands would be considered a "legislative leader"...he's part of the Queen's Court or something like that, but I'm sure he'll be itching to participate, if any hearings are ever seriously launched. For him to testify on the consequences of the damage done by our "War on Terror" and the need for certain individuals to take responsibility for that damage, in order to simply repair our USA, just might spark the whole thing onward to impeachment.
