I'm against these "it's unhealthy" bans, but I do have a question. |
|
How would a state justify banning trans fat while allowing the sale of cigarettes? http://www.sacbee.com/111/story/1082742.htmlDisclosure: I don't care if I eat trans fat and I do smoke.

1. You can still eat trans fats, you just can't go to a restaurant with trans fats. Much like smoking. |
|
Try finding a place in the cities that allow you to smoke. I'd be surprised.

For the libertarian types:
You usually don't know what's in your restaurant food- so you can't make a choice like you could by reading a label in the supermarket.

6. How are They Comparable? |
|
No one goes into a restaurant to order something with transfat. They go to order fried foods or pastries. They have no idea whether there is any transfat in what they're eating. It's a health hazard created not by not by customer demand but by cost and ease of restaurant operations.

They ain't gonna ban a big tax base like the wine industry. And if they try it, I'm going right out and get me an assault rifle.

9. Lord knows what they will do in the interest of 'public health' and costs (kinda like terrorism) |
|
scare people, tell em you are saving them from something (wasted money, attacks, death, etc), and then introduce some legislation that will make it all better and folks will live forever. Or if not forever at least longer.
Until they realize the air quality is worse outside than inside a smoky bar....

What is your technique to discriminate true public health concerns from alledged manufactured hysteria?

Where the air quality is so bad they tell people to stay indoors.
I also work for an ambulance company, and the air here causes many issues for folks and especially during this time of year we stay busy.
We aren't making runs to bars because of smoke from smokers, we are too busy dealing with the air quality outside and the health problems it causes.

11. Wouldn't this go in under "food safety"? |
|
When you buy cigs you get a list of ingredients. When you buy groceries you can look at the ingredients. At restaurants you don't really know WHAT'S in there.

A transfat ban is more akin to the lead paint ban. Both are known toxins in which their dangers are obscured and often undetectable until the damage is done. The issue is informed consent.
