Al Franken worries even the Democrats in Minnesota
Al Franken worries even the Democrats in Minnesota
By Steven Thomma | McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — Minnesota should be a slam-dunk for the Democrats as they look for places to gain Senate seats and a big enough majority to control the legislative agenda next year.

It's the land of Democratic icons such as Hubert Humphrey, Walter Mondale and Paul Wellstone. A place where Democrat Barack Obama leads in two new polls by 17 percentage points and an overall average of 12 points. And a year when the Republican brand is, to put it charitably, damaged.

But there's a problem.

The Democratic candidate is comedian Al Franken, and he's had a rough start. Revelations have surfaced about his tax problems and about raunchy jokes on rape and on Internet porn for 12-year-olds. His moment of triumph seizing the state party convention's endorsement had to include an apology.

He still could defeat Republican Sen. Norm Coleman. But for now, he trails by an average of 7 percentage points.

1. Minnesota muffed the punt
Coleman would be ripe for the pickings with a strong experienced candidate. Instead they bought into the Franken hype which died about four years ago.

2. how is it that Franken's tax situation is still getting press
and McCain's lack of paying taxes for 4 fricking years is still under the radar - not even published in my hometown Seattle Times?

4. Revelations have surfaced???? Are you kidding me??
I remember one skit from "The Al Franken Decade" on SNL where he came out dressed in a smoking jacket with a pipe in a big leather chair and said that he once was against the draft (because he was eligible for it at the time) but now that he was older and making big money he'd changed his mind and supported a draft to protect his overseas interests. It was a hella funny skit.

Will Coleman pull this skit out to show Al's a flip-flopper or supports a draft? That's as ludicrous as any uproar over his past comedy writing.

5. Bizarre, isn't it. Look at Ventura; his past wasn't exactly
sterling and no one seemed to care. I wonder what in heck is so attactive about Coleman.
