Is there a DU book/DVD exchange, or would there be any interest in one?

Forgive me if such a forum exists already. If so, I haven't found it (but haven't looked too hard, either).

It seems that with many DU'ers sharing the same interests and concerns, this would be a natural. As many times as titles such as "Who Killed the Electric Car?" (DVD) and "Armed Madhouse" are mentioned here, it might be a great way to sell, trade, or donate reading and viewing material with like minded people.

I don't have the extra money for books/DVDs and my local libraries often don't have the items I am looking for.

But it would probably be best to keep books and dvd's separate. There could also be folders for digital cameras and other consumer electronics, computer hardware & software, cd's, other..?

I know Skinner doesn't want to turn this site into DUBay™, so there would probably have to be some limitations. :)

23. I wonder who would mediate

for when a problem arises, like a DVD/books not returned, or damaged in someway. I am sure that 99% of the transactions will be on good terms, but what happens and who would be the one to mediate, when it isn't?

I included a line in the 'mission statement': The honor system is in effect here. It should be a given that all items in an exchange will be offered in good condition, but any quality issues or other differences are strictly between the parties involved.

Perhaps a user ratings system could be implemented somehow ala eBay or the PaperBackSwap site.

8. Great idea! Count me in.

I used to belong to a great dvd exchange club on the web. You would list all of your dvds that you would be willing to exchange. You then looked at other member's lists and see what they had. Find one you like and make an offer. It cost you shipping, to send to the person you were exchanging with.

Never received a bad dvd or had anyone NOT send one in exchange. Including books would be a great idea, also.

Were there any other gotcha's I'm not considering on this? The only ones I can think of are: participants would have to feel comfortable giving their mailing address (or a PO box) out to other DU'ers; and should have the ability to return items that are not received in reasonably good condition.

The exchange might be better implemented in a single document such as a spreadsheet rather than a large number of posts with each individual's books, but I don't know if DU software is capable of such a thing.

9. If you have a donor star, you can help create a "Book Exchange' group

by agreeing to be an active participant. We would need at least ten donors to agree on this thread per the rules. Then, a 'mission statement' for the group would be submitted to a DU Administrator, who can accept or reject the group.

I'm out of the U.S. right now and mail is rather slow here, I'd love to see an electronic book exchange -- in English and Spanish-- but any kind of exchange would be wonderful.
