Crap I just saw an ad for olympic coverage on NBC. I forgot they have them, guess we have more of
this to come.

Announcer 1: Well, she's crying not because she won but because she found out that her parents were just killed back in her little non-American country because of something they stood for against the government, or something like that.

Announcer 2: Enough about that, American Jimbob Shatstain is about to race, and we want to show you the tragedy in his recent life. Last week Jimbob's childhood neighbor's ex-wife's dog collapsed in her back yard, although the three year old beagle has made a full recovery, veterinarians are still baffled as to how and why it happened, here's our thirty minute report.

After the story.

Announcer 1: And Jimbob Shatstain is ready to go, just look at the determination in his face, to be able to focus like that at this time in his life . . . just incredible, incredible.

Announcer 2: And there you see, the entire Shatstain family watching from a TGIFridays back home.

Announcer 1: Of course they all had to pay over $4 a gallon for gas to get to that TGIFridays.

Announcer 2: Yes, Yes, you know American courage, bravery and sacrifice truly know no bounds.

1. Naomi Wolf was on Amy's show today, telling how this is now an excuse
for American security contractors to put cameras all over, to link them and how they will remain there after the Olympics are over.

American ingenuity. Facilitating police states!

2. I'd say you captured the flavor of the coverage quite well. . .
Like you, I'd forgotten just how nerve-grating Olympic coverage can be. I hope though I'm able to see some of the events in between the wretch-inducing coverage. Lot of good athletes on this planet. It's nice to see them compete, even if those who televise the events haven't a clue what's truly important in any of the games.

3. That's about right. The Winter Olympics are even worse. Especially 1994. CBS. Remember?
Jim McKay had class. But he was at ABC.

The CBS 1994 Winter Olympics had to be the most disgusting show of schmaltz ever to distract from athletic achievement. Every single contender (especially Americans, of course) had some violins-backed Heartbreak of Psoriasis video biography. This was the one where Tonya Harding cried, "Why?" when her skate laces broke, after having Nancy Kerrigan clubbed (she didn't know? Yeah, right.) Nancy was an uptight bitch who proved it after the Olympics, when she could have been America's Sweetheart but lost it when her nasty Cruella De Ville personality came to the forefront.

Dan Jansen by this time had blown two previous Olympics; he finally won a Gold. Nice moment, but he was so soap opera-ed by the coverage that I'm surprised he didn't pull a Richard Corey. Torvill and Dean, Torvill and Dean, Torvill and Dean. Did I mention wall-to-wall coverage of Torvill and Dean? There was more. You can look it up. Until 1994, I was a big-time Winter Olympics fan (helllloooo Katerina Witt), but that ended it for me. Probably the worst sports coverage by a U.S. network in history. That's OK, Jim Nance is a close friend of Rush Limbaugh. Figures.

4. Also the never ending moronic chatter during the opening ceremonies, with requisite
interruptions every two minutes to have a commercial. Insipid information on countries that the announcers find amusing. Did you know that they call soda something wierd there?

5. That should put the Rachel vs KO threads to rest for awhile
NBC Universal will present the most Olympic coverage in history next month with over 3,600 hours on NBC, USA, MSNBC, CNBC, Oxygen, Telemundo, Universal HD and NBCOlympics.com.

The media conglomerate is broadcasting its record 11th Olympics and is expected to air nearly 2,900 hours of live sports from Beijing.

NBCU’s unprecedented Olympics coverage features the most live coverage in the United States (75 percent in all), across the most platforms, of any Summer Olympics in history when the Games of the XXIX Olympiad commence on Aug. 8.
