We can't say anything about Captain Combover's military service, we tell ourselves.

...and the lies they repeat to each other and share as a way to identify "fellow travelers".

Remember that movie "Expelled"? You know, that box-office smash about Intelligence Design? Starring Ben Stein, former speech writer for Richard Nixon? It might not be important to the reality-based community, but don't forget where the movie got its "premier": churches.

That movie was pushed through the churches first, beyond the reach (and knowledge) of people who might not agree.

The movie never made money, but it wasn't made to make money; it was made to reinforce true believers. And that's what the GOPhers do in their little secret forums and think tanks and "community groups".

The billboard is out there for people to see, but it's not out there to convert anyone; it's there for people who already believe that. It gives them validation.

The billboard maker is selling doubt, nothing else.
