Senate Energy Comm. - Oil Prices Workshop - 9am Thursday 7/17/08

Building on the success of previous energy-themed workshops -- on climate, on natural gas, on coal, on biofuels, etc. – the Senate Energy Committee will convene another such workshop, on transportation and heating fuel costs, this Thursday, July 17. Senators will look carefully at why today’s gasoline and diesel prices, and tomorrow’s home heating fuel prices, are/will be so high, and what can be done about it. All 100 members of the U.S. Senate have been invited to offer their views and recommendations on this vexing problem.

The workshop will begin at 9:00 a.m. in Room G-50 of the Dirksen Office Building. A limited number of subject matter experts also will participate.

3. But sometimes I'm up REALLY late -- like until 5 or so,
so that's technically morning here on the East Coast. Not gonna happen tonight, though.

Why it matters: The workshop builds on the success of previous energy-themed workshops the committee has held on climate, natural gas, coal and biofuels. More than that, it will provide a discussion forum outside official floor or committee proceedings for senators and their staffs to examine possible causes of higher crude oil and gasoline prices.

It comes amid continuing reports that politically centrist senators from both parties and their staffs want to formulate legislation which will address the supply as well as the price problem. While proponents of increased access to domestic acreage got a boost from President Bush's lifting of the executive order banning federal leases on the Outer Continental Shelf, several have admitted that any bill also will need to have meaningful conservation and renewable fuels provisions.
