Happy 91st birthday, PHYLLIS DILLER!
---"I went to a gay wedding and I caught the jockstrap. In San Francisco, a mixed marriage is a man and woman!" While her rapid-fire one-liners skewered her gawky looks and her unhappy domestic life, she never stooped to homophobic humor—although gays were an easy mark in the McCarthy era. “No, no, no, no,” she said. “In fact, Joan Rivers and I both absolutely insist that we never would have got started without our gay audience. They were the first to actually accept us as funny women.”

---"You know you're old when they've discontinued your blood type."

---"I consider comebacks cheap. And bad taste. It's like those stores that advertise 'Going Out of Business Sale!' and 'Lost Our Lease! Must Sell Everything!' Two weeks later they open another store. Not this kid, baby!"

---"In the year 3000 the universe will be expanding as it will forever, infinitely. We will probe outer space but never find life as evolutionized as ours. We were not created by a deity. We created the deity on OUR image. Life began on this planet when the first amoeba split. Mankind will still be seeking God, not accepting that God is a spirit; can't see it, touch it, only feel it. It's called LOVE."

---"Never go to bed mad. Stay up and fight."

4. I just saw the Boston Public
episode (on DVD) where Denny Crane is trying to visualize Raquel Welch into his life and Phyllis shows up instead. I about bust a gut. She's still got it. Comic genius.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. It's nice to have something cheerful to think about for a change.

5. Still waiting for the "Pruitts of Southampton" remake
Diller was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1967 for http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060017/">the show. It also had Richard Deacon in it, who died a few years ago.

I was about nine, but I thought it was hysterical.

She also wrote a couple of sex-advice books (or what passed for "sex" in the late 1960s). The inspiration, no doubt, for Ruth Westheimer.

Happy Birthday, Phyllis Diller!

We'll have to do something special for her hundredth birthday in 2017. Maybe bake her a cake and have Brendan Fraser jump out of it.

Or maybe Dwayne Johnson?

16. I think there is one on YouTube
I also heard -- strictly as a pop-culture message board rumor -- that there are plans to release the full 30 eps on DVD before 2010. Maybe a letter or two could sway a few execs. I Spy did well in re-release, and several other shows from that era are appearing on DVD.

I heard that Phyllis Diller and Richard Deacon both got burned by TPOS, but received critical notice. It was also one of Paul Lynde's early TV successes; he had a smallish part.

There were a whole lot of lousy shows on during the 1960s, but there were also some overlooked gems.

"I was such a bad driver. I'd look at my dashboard & I didn't know if I was going 100MPH or it was one o'clock in the afternoon."

One of the funniest people ever.

8. Happy birthday!
I was glad to see the Pruitts of Southampton reference above. Even though I was just coming into puberty when the show was on ABC, I appreciated Phyllis Diller's irreverent humor. I'm glad she's still kicking up dust on this ol' earth.

14. Fang!
still cracks me up. Fang's mom was called Moby Dick:

"Moby Dick's dress size is junior missile. We didn't have a sunken living room until she arrived. When she takes her girdle off, her feet disappear. Someday I'd like to slit that girdle open and watch her spread to death....Talk about old -- her social security number is 2! The only reason she wasn't on Noah's Ark was because they couldn't find another animal that looked like her....God, she's ugly! When she blew her nose downtown, the construction crew broke for lunch....You should hear her sing. She hit high C and spayed the dog...."

Happy B-Day!
