Impeachment Begins July 25th
At 10 a.m. on Friday July 25th, the House Judiciary Committee will hold a preliminary hearing on the topic of impeachment, with a presentation by Congressman Dennis Kucinich. This is not yet a true impeachment hearing, but it is our opportunity to push for one, and it represents a tremendous victory after years of effort by millions of Americans who want to keep the Constitution alive. This never would have happened without your hard work. And we can't let up now!

The National Impeachment Network is organizing a rally and asking everyone who can to take a day off for justice and meet at 9 a.m. on Friday July 25th in front of the Rayburn House Office Building on the Independence Avenue side. Bring impeachment shirts and posters! For more information contact ningroup@gmail.com

NOTE: The hearing has not been announced, but two members of Congress closely involved in this have told us it is at 10 a.m. on the 25th, and Chairman Conyers himself has so informed Veterans for Peace.

Between now and Friday the 25th, please take these steps:

Contact your member of Congress in support of impeachment.

Ask the media to cover the hearing.

Sign the petition at Congressman Kucinich's website.

121. Hold your horses...... There is no voting involved .. no one is getting impeached
That's right .. as a condition to the to allow the hearing Nancy 'Spineless' Pelosi made clear that there will no voting involved - I am not sure what is the real point -- I can almost see the chimp smirking away , confident that this is not going to touch him in anyway ..

2. gee, 6 whole months before he leaves, way to go
nothing will happen from this, but should it, it wouldnt happen within the time remaining in his final term. Bush has been in office 7 1/2 years and we are just now getting to the hearings (as impotent as they may be)

...they don't want Cheney or any other RW madman to have enough time to do more damage when they take bu$h's place as President?

76. I don't think they
will go forward with actual impeachment but I'm really glad they're having hearings and that all the crimes will go on the record!! The GOP will not allow, by their votes, to get it voted on on the floor. Maybe in the 111th congress, after we take back even more seats but for now, this is a good thing!!! :D

when he is acquited in the Senate, he won't have a long time to revel in the "vindication", cause even more harm to the country than he already has, and his "legacy" will be permanently damaged.

34. They could impeach in ONE DAY! He's already confessed on Nat'l TV to impeachable offenses.

Approving the wiretaps was a felony, he may have done it before 9/11,
and it shows clear contempt for the Constitution.

Dean Johnson is a former prosecutor and he says the strongest legal case against Mr. Bush would likely be for the National Security Agency's warrantless wiretaps of millions of American telephone calls.

ABC7 Legal Analyst Dean Johnson: "Section 1809 of the FISA Act provides that any public official who engages in a wiretap, without authorization, is guilty of a felony - I think it's beyond a reasonable dispute that President Bush violated that statute."

Congress needs to stand up and defend the Constitution.

96. For those who are not familiar with the process, "impeaching" and "convicting"
are 2 different things. Impeachment followed by acquittal is really for those who are into sex without the possibility of orgasm--at least they can claim they got laid. Impeach Bush and after he is acquitted by the Senate you will see him do a strut smirk that will make you want to :puke: Of course, if by some miracle he was convicted, then President Cheney's first act would be to :nuke: That's kind of the choice: puke or nuke.

102. I'd say start the hearings and let all the dirty laundry come out.
If the Repubs want to vote that way, they'll just have to explain why they see nothing wrong with torture and war crimes. They DO want to get re-elected. If it becomes too much of a noose around their necks, it will probably come down to them having to vote in favor of conviction in hopes of saving their asses. Another thing to keep in mind (Wexler had mentioned this) is that it wasn't until after the House Judiciary hearings were started that the Watergate tapes emerged. You know, the "smoking guns" which were ultimately what had an impact. Who knows? It may come time for that "walk to the WH" to let Bush and Cheney know the mask has come off and things are no longer salvagable. And I wouldn't worry about Cheney becoming president. Most likely what would happen is Cheney steps down for "health reasons," Bush gets to appoint a new veep (Fred Thompson, perhaps?), then Bush resigns and the caretaker prez steps up and appoints himself a veep (Colin Powell?). I don't know for sure, but we'll see what we'll see.

If you do score, you won't cum. Give it up. How about a nice snort of smack?"

75. It's too late to reverse what Bush has accomplished in the world.
It's not too late to reverse what Bush has accomplished in terms of
precedents and revising policies.

If we don't impeach him, every President in the future will claim the
powers he's usurped--including the right to scribble signing statements
across every piece of legislation that crosses his or her desk, which
steals for the executive branch the powers of the legislative branch
to write the law and the judicial branch to interpret it.

even if it happens on his LAST day in office!

59. How does this read to send in with my petition signature?
President George W. Bush has either neglectfully or purposefully disregarded, or outright thrawted the laws that he has sworn to uphold as written in the Constitution of the United States.

As brought forth in the Articles of impeachment presented by Representative Dennis Kucinich in June,George W. Bush is responsible for many impeachable offenses.

His actions and sometimes seemingly lack of action has had an extreme and devastating effect on the continuity of our Democracy and has endangered and caused US citizens to have been placed in unprotected circumstances resulting in some cases of death.

His signing statements have been misused to benefit some counter agenda disregarding the labored deliberations and considerations by Our Congress waving the Constitutional power and the integrity of Congress and dismissing the public welfare which he is again sworn to protect.

He has twisted and misrepresented himself and used our international good will, national treasury and the people's personal civil rights for nefarious consolidation of executive power.

He has allowed and may have participated in the authorization of systematic use of torture by changing and inventing his own set of rules to contain, render, and interrogate suspected captured 9-11 collaborators ignoring our national laws, international laws, previous battle procedures and the Geneva Conventions.

Planning to remake the Middle East in some preconcocked vision planned before the horrific attacks by the suspected Taliban Leaders and executed be Saudis, is not in the authority of a Democratic President when the Congress is misinformed or coerced into submission.

These are a few of the major offenses that have been reveiled over his long and seemingly corrupt administration.

As a President in a Democracy his duty is to you, me, and to our countryman. When I review and actions taken by George W. Bush over his term in office, I see not one that will help us to conserve our democracy.

Investigation into his actions are well overdue and his use of executive privilege has been pulled out of his pocket and used as Carte Blanche for anyone he wishes. Again this in itself is reason for impeachment proceedings to be on the table.

Protecting our democracy from being undermined or destroyed is the responsibility of everyone who sees the signs of corruption leading to the highest office.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush has been a "total failure" in everything from the economy to the war to energy policy, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday. In an interview on CNN, the California Democrat was asked to respond to video of the president criticizing the Democratic-led Congress for heading into the final 26 days of the legislative session without having passed a single government spending bill.

Pelosi shot back in unusually personal terms.

"You know, God bless him, bless his heart, president of the United States, a total failure, losing all credibility with the American people on the economy, on the war, on energy, you name the subject," Pelosi replied. She then tsk-tsked Bush for "challenging Congress when we are trying to sweep up after his mess over and over and over again."

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino defended Bush.

"What the president said is a fact - this is the longest a Congress has gone in 20 years without passing a single spending bill, so it's clear that the speaker is feeling some frustration at their inability to do so."

Pelosi's outburst was a departure. Her usual practice in public has been to call Bush's policies a failure - not his presidency or him, personally. Pelosi's remarks are the latest evidence of the Democrats' throw-caution-to-the-wind approach to Bush in the waning days of a presidency weighed down by an unpopular war and soaring gasoline prices.

Election Day, after all, is just over four months away; Bush's successor takes his seat on Jan. 20.

Pelosi's counterpart in the Senate, Majority Leader Harry Reid, long ago took off the rhetorical gloves. Last month, he ridiculed Republicans who sided with Bush on a Medicare bill.

"Who would be afraid of him?" Reid, D-Nev., said as many senators looked on. "He's got a 29 percent approval rating."

The public's view of Congress is even worse. Its approval rating has hit a new low of just 18 percent, down from 23 percent last month, according to a new AP-Ipsos poll. Bush's approval is at 28 percent, about even with the 29 percent rating last month.

Only 16 percent of those surveyed thought the country was moving in the right direction, a new low as well, although statistically the same as last month's 17 percent.

Last week Reid and other Democrats dropped any pretense of trying to fight the president on battles they were likely to lose - even on the most important part of their jobs, which is passing spending bills that keep the government running.

Of the 12 annual appropriations bills, Congress is likely to pass one or two and send Bush a temporary spending fix for the rest. That would have to suffice until a new president takes office, Reid told reporters.

Privately, Democrats have said that either candidate for president - Democrat Barack Obama or Republican John McCain - would be easier to make laws with than Bush. But Reid made clear which he'd prefer.

"I would hope that before we would leave here this year that we would do a continuing resolution that would get us (through) until after Senator Obama becomes president," he said.

115. English Translation of a John Conyers Press Release
By David Swanson

Below is the original text of a July 17, 2008, media advisory from House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers in the original Pelosiconi, followed by the English in all caps.

Conyers Announces Hearing on Bush Imperial Presidency
CONYERS ANNOUNCES BRIEF DISMISSIVE TWO-HOUR REVIEW OF SEVEN AND A HALF YEARS OF SUCH BLATANT AND DICTATORIAL CRIMINALITY THAT HE IS CONSTRAINED TO NAME IT WITH AN OXYMORON TO AVOID USING THE WORD "IMPEACHMENT"

(Washington)—Today House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. announced that, on July 25, the House Committee on the Judiciary will hold a hearing on the Imperial Presidency of George W. Bush and possible legal responses.
(CHENEYVILLE)--TODAY SENIOR MEMBER OF THE CAPITOL HILL DEBATE SOCIETY AND FORMER CONGRESS MEMBER JOHN CONYERS JR. ANNOUNCED AN INFORMAL GABFEST ON THE GEORGE W. BUSH DICTATORSHIP AND POSSIBLE RESPONSES THAT MIGHT BE TAKEN BY PROSECUTORS EMPLOYED BY THE ACCUSED, IT BEING UNDERSTOOD THAT NO RESPONSE WILL BE FORTHCOMING FROM THE DEBATE SOCIETY. A LIGHT BREAKFAST WILL BE SERVED.

“Over the last seven plus years, there have been numerous credible allegations of serious misconduct by officials in the Bush Administration,” said Conyers. “At the same time, the administration has adopted what many would describe as a radical view of its own powers and authorities. As Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, I believe it is imperative that we pursue a comprehensive review commensurate to this constitutionally dangerous combination of circumstances. Next Friday’s hearings will be an important part of that ongoing effort.”
SINCE THE OPEN COUP THAT STOLE THE 2000 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION WE HAVE SEEN AN END TO OUR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC AND THE INSTALLATION OF A DESPOT WHO OPENLY VIOLATES LAWS (WITH CONGRESS IN SOME CASES RETROACTIVELY LEGALIZING THE VIOLATIONS), OPENLY REWRITES LAWS WITH SO-CALLED SIGNING STATEMENTS, OPERATES IN NEAR TOTAL SECRECY ON MANY MATTERS THAT WERE PREVIOUSLY PUBLIC, REFUSES TO COMPLY WITH REQUESTS, FOIA REQUESTS, SUBPOENAS, OR CONTEMPT CITATIONS, ORDERS CURRENT AND FORMER STAFF NOT TO COMPLY WITH SUBPOENAS, BLATANTLY MIS-SPENDS MONIES NOT APPROPRIATED BY CONGRESS, KIDNAPS, DETAINS WITHOUT CHARGE, TORTURES, MURDERS, SPIES WITHOUT WARRANT AND OPENLY CONFESSES TO DOING SO, SOLICITS BRIBES, KNOWINGLY MISLEADS THE NATION INTO CATASTROPHIC WAR AND JOKES ABOUT IT, AND ABANDONS AN ENTIRE AMERICAN CITY TO DESTRUCTION CLAIMING TO HAVE HAD NO IDEA A MAJOR HURRICANE WAS COMING DESPITE VIDEOTAPE OF HIMSELF BEING WARNED. UNLIKE THE ABUSES OF POWER COMMITTED BY RICHARD NIXON, BUSH AND CHENEY HAVE WORKED TO ESTABLISH THE PERMANENT RIGHT OF THE U.S. DICTATOR TO ENGAGE IN THESE ACTIVITIES. AS SENIOR MEMBER OF THE DEBATE CLUB, I WOULD LIKE TO REQUEST THAT NO FURTHER MENTION EVER BE MADE IN THIS CHAMBER OF THE BOOK I PUBISHED TWO YEARS AGO IN WHICH I LISTED NUMEROUS FELONIES COMMITTED BY BUSH AND CHENEY, AND IN THE NEW FOREWORD TO WHICH FORMER CONGRESSWOMAN ELIZABETH HOLTZMAN WROTE LAST YEAR "IMPEACHING PRESIDENT BUSH FOR LYING TO GET US INTO A WAR WILL NOT ONLY PROTECT US FROM HIM, BUT ALSO SEND AN UNMISTAKABLE MESSAGE TO FUTURE PRESIDENTS: NEVER AGAIN." ON THE BACK COVER OF THAT BOOK I SAID OUR SECURITY AND LIBERTY WERE THREATENED BY BUSH'S AND CHENEY'S ABUSES OF POWER. WHAT I MEANT TO SAY WAS "IF I WERE TO ACT, FOX NEWS MIGHT CALL ME MEAN NAMES." SO, I'M STILL STALLING, AND NEXT FRIDAY'S SESSION WILL BE PART OF THAT STALLING EFFORT UNLESS SOME OF MY COLLEAGUES FAIL TO TOE THE LINE.

The Committee is expected to examine a range of legal and legislative responses to allegations of administration misconduct and their expansion of executive branch power.
WHILE THIS HEARING IS AN IDEA I'VE TOYED WITH FOR MANY MONTHS AS A POSSIBLE WAY TO ADVERTISE BUSH'S CRIMES FOR ELECTORAL GAIN WHILE HOPING NOBODY NOTICES MY FAILURE TO ACTUALLY DO ANYTHING ABOUT THEM, AND WHILE I'M ONLY GOING AHEAD WITH IT NOW BECAUSE THE PRESSURE FOR IMPEACHMENT HAS BEEN GETTING TO PELOSI AND SHE TOLD ME TO, I WANT TO BE CLEAR FROM THE OUTSET THAT POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO BE CONSIDERED IN DEPTH DURING THIS 2-HOUR EVENT INCLUDE ASKING EMPLOYEES OF THE DICTATOR TO TAKE HIM TO COURT AND ASKING THE DICTATOR HIMSELF TO VETO BILLS. IN CASE THAT'S NOT CLEAR ENOUGH FOR YOU, I'LL NONSENSICALLY REFER TO BUSH AS AN EXECUTIVE EVEN THOUGH HE'S NO MORE EXECUTING THE WILL OF CONGRESS THAN IS ANY FOREIGN DICTATOR.

Since the beginning of the 110th Congress, the Committee has conducted extensive oversight into allegations of misconduct by the administration, including: (1) improper politicization of the Justice Department and the U.S. Attorneys offices, including potential misuse of authority with regard to election and voting controversies; (2) misuse of executive branch authority and the adoption and implementation of the so-called unitary executive theory, including in the areas of presidential signing statements and regulatory authority; (3) misuse of investigatory and detention authority with regard to U.S. citizens and foreign nationals, including questions regarding the legality of the administration’s surveillance, detention, interrogation, and rendition programs; (4) manipulation of intelligence and misuse of war powers, including possible misrepresentations to Congress related thereto; (5) improper retaliation against administration critics, including disclosing information concerning CIA operative Valerie Plame, and obstruction of justice related thereto; and (6) misuse of authority in denying Congress and the American people the ability to oversee and scrutinize conduct within the administration, including through the use of various asserted privileges and immunities.
EVEN THOUGH WE WON ELECTIONS AFTER TRYING TO IMPEACH NIXON AND LOST AFTER AVOIDING IMPEACHING REAGAN, AND EVEN THOUGH NO AMOUNT OF HUMAN BLOOD COULD DISTRACT ME FROM THE SUPREME IMPORTANCE OF ELECTIONS, I'M NOW GOING TO BRAG ABOUT SEVERAL OF BUSH'S AND CHENEY'S IMPEACHABLE OFFENSES I'VE LOOKED OVER IN DETAIL BEFORE REFUSING TO PURSUE THEM. IF THIS MAKES ME LOOK BAD AND HELPS DROP CONGRESS BELOW 9% APPROVAL, I WILL AT LEAST BE ABLE TO PLEAD OBLIVIOUSNESS. (1) AS PART OF A MULTIFACETED PROGRAM OF ELECTION FRAUD, BUSH HAS TURNED THE FORMER JUSTICE DEPARTMENT INTO THE ELECTION CONTROL OFFICE OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. (2) THE GAO HAS FOUND THAT IN MANY CASES BUSH HAS VIOLATED THE LAWS HE CLAIMED THE RIGHT TO VIOLATE IN SIGNING STATEMENTS. THIS WOULD BE AN OPEN-AND-SHUT IMPEACHMENT HEARING IF I GAVE A RAT'S ASS ABOUT THE RULE OF LAW OR THE SEPARATION OF POWERS. (3) WHILE TORTURE HAS ALWAYS BEEN UNEQUIVOCALLY ILLEGAL AND ABSOLUTELY BANNED REGARDLESS OF THE SITUATION, I HAVE "QUESTIONS" ABOUT WHETHER BUSH'S AND CHENEY'S TORTURING OF PEOPLE IS LEGAL. (4) BUSH LIED US INTO WAR, THE EVIDENCE IS OVERWHELMING, BUT I'LL TREAT IT AS IN DOUBT. (5) TREASON IS NOT A TOP CONCERN RIGHT NOW. (6) UNILATERALLY DISARMING BY REMOVING IMPEACHMENT FROM THE CONSTITUTION LEAVES ONE POWERLESS TO GET REQUESTS AND SUBPOENAS COMPLIED WITH, BUT NOT POWERLESS TO WHINE ABOUT IT.

The July 25 hearing will be held at 10:00 a.m. in room 2141 of the Rayburn House Office Building. Additional information, including witness participation, will be announced next week.
I WORK FOR YOU AND HOPE THAT YOU SHOW UP TO HOLD ME TO ACCOUNT SOMETIMES ON CAPITOL HILL. BUT I WOULD NEVER INVITE YOU TO SOMETHING THIS IMPORTANT. I MAINLY WANT TO MAKE SURE FOX NEWS IS THERE.

*****

AN ADDENDUM ALSO IN THE ORIGINAL AND ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

Als die Nazis die Kommunisten holten,
habe ich geschwiegen;
ich war ja kein Kommunist.

Als sie die Sozialdemokraten einsperrten,
habe ich geschwiegen;
ich war ja kein Sozialdemokrat.

Als sie die Gewerkschafter holten,

Als sie die Juden holten,

Als sie mich holten,

WHEN THE NAZIS CAME FOR THE COMMUNISTS

WHEN THEY LOCKED UP THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATS

I WAS NOT A SOCIAL DEMOCRAT

WHEN THEY CAME FOR THE TRADE UNIONISTS
I DID NOT SPEAK OUT;

WHEN THEY CAME FOR THE JEWS

119. As the OP has now had to acknowledge, the original post in this thread was wrong
Yes there will be a hearing on July 25. But calling it a "preliminary hearing on impeachment" was a huge overstatement, as the OP now admits further down the thread.

124. Prepare for the deluge of "congress witch hunt" while the economy crashes
This will be used against congress for "wasting" what little time is left in the session.

You can take that to the ba^h^h FDIC takeover.

125. Economy is directly related to the One to Three Trillion dollars
we will spend on this invasion which was based on lies.

We could also look at the human suffering and the number of future terrorists this is creating.
