Impeachment Begins July 25th

At 10 a.m. on Friday July 25th, the House Judiciary Committee will hold a preliminary hearing on the topic of impeachment, with a presentation by Congressman Dennis Kucinich. This is not yet a true impeachment hearing, but it is our opportunity to push for one, and it represents a tremendous victory after years of effort by millions of Americans who want to keep the Constitution alive. This never would have happened without your hard work. And we can't let up now!

The National Impeachment Network is organizing a rally and asking everyone who can to take a day off for justice and meet at 9 a.m. on Friday July 25th in front of the Rayburn House Office Building on the Independence Avenue side. NOTE: The hearing has not been announced, but two members of Congress closely involved in this have told us it is at 10 a.m. on the 25th, and Chairman Conyers himself has so informed Veterans for Peace.

If the Repubs want to vote that way, they'll just have to explain why they see nothing wrong with torture and war crimes. They DO want to get re-elected. If it becomes too much of a noose around their necks, it will probably come down to them having to vote in favor of conviction in hopes of saving their asses. Another thing to keep in mind (Wexler had mentioned this) is that it wasn't until after the House Judiciary hearings were started that the Watergate tapes emerged. You know, the "smoking guns" which were ultimately what had an impact. Who knows? It may come time for that "walk to the WH" to let Bush and Cheney know the mask has come off and things are no longer salvagable. And I wouldn't worry about Cheney becoming president. Most likely what would happen is Cheney steps down for "health reasons," Bush gets to appoint a new veep (Fred Thompson, perhaps?), then Bush resigns and the caretaker prez steps up and appoints himself a veep (Colin Powell?). I don't know for sure, but we'll see what we'll see.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush has been a "total failure" in everything from the economy to the war to energy policy, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday. In an interview on CNN, the California Democrat was asked to respond to video of the president criticizing the Democratic-led Congress for heading into the final 26 days of the legislative session without having passed a single government spending bill.

Pelosi shot back in unusually personal terms.

"You know, God bless him, bless his heart, president of the United States, a total failure, losing all credibility with the American people on the economy, on the war, on energy, you name the subject," Pelosi replied. She then tsk-tsked Bush for "challenging Congress when we are trying to sweep up after his mess over and over and over again."

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino defended Bush.

"What the president said is a fact - this is the longest a Congress has gone in 20 years without passing a single spending bill, so it's clear that the speaker is feeling some frustration at their inability to do so."

Pelosi's outburst was a departure. Her usual practice in public has been to call Bush's policies a failure - not his presidency or him, personally. Pelosi's remarks are the latest evidence of the Democrats' throw-caution-to-the-wind approach to Bush in the waning days of a presidency weighed down by an unpopular war and soaring gasoline prices.

Election Day, after all, is just over four months away; Bush's successor takes his seat on Jan. 20.

Pelosi's counterpart in the Senate, Majority Leader Harry Reid, long ago took off the rhetorical gloves. Last month, he ridiculed Republicans who sided with Bush on a Medicare bill.

"Who would be afraid of him?" Reid, D-Nev., said as many senators looked on. "He's got a 29 percent approval rating."

The public's view of Congress is even worse. Its approval rating has hit a new low of just 18 percent, down from 23 percent last month, according to a new AP-Ipsos poll. Bush's approval is at 28 percent, about even with the 29 percent rating last month.

Only 16 percent of those surveyed thought the country was moving in the right direction, a new low as well, although statistically the same as last month's 17 percent.

Last week Reid and other Democrats dropped any pretense of trying to fight the president on battles they were likely to lose - even on the most important part of their jobs, which is passing spending bills that keep the government running.

Of the 12 annual appropriations bills, Congress is likely to pass one or two and send Bush a temporary spending fix for the rest. That would have to suffice until a new president takes office, Reid told reporters.

Privately, Democrats have said that either candidate for president - Democrat Barack Obama or Republican John McCain - would be easier to make laws with than Bush. But Reid made clear which he'd prefer.

"I would hope that before we would leave here this year that we would do a continuing resolution that would get us (through) until after Senator Obama becomes president," he said.

WHILE THIS HEARING IS AN IDEA I'VE TOYED WITH FOR MANY MONTHS AS A POSSIBLE WAY TO ADVERTISE BUSH'S CRIMES FOR ELECTORAL GAIN WHILE HOPING NOBODY NOTICES MY FAILURE TO ACTUALLY DO ANYTHING ABOUT THEM, AND WHILE I'M ONLY GOING AHEAD WITH IT NOW BECAUSE THE PRESSURE FOR IMPEACHMENT HAS BEEN GETTING TO PELOSI AND SHE TOLD ME TO, I WANT TO BE CLEAR FROM THE OUTSET THAT POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO BE CONSIDERED IN DEPTH DURING THIS 2-HOUR EVENT INCLUDE ASKING EMPLOYEES OF THE DICTATOR TO TAKE HIM TO COURT AND ASKING THE DICTATOR HIMSELF TO VETO BILLS. IN CASE THAT'S NOT CLEAR ENOUGH FOR YOU, I'LL NONSENSICALLY REFER TO BUSH AS AN EXECUTIVE EVEN THOUGH HE'S NO MORE EXECUTING THE WILL OF CONGRESS THAN IS ANY FOREIGN DICTATOR.

Since the beginning of the 110th Congress, the Committee has conducted extensive oversight into allegations of misconduct by the administration, including: (1) improper politicization of the Justice Department and the U.S. Attorneys offices, including potential misuse of authority with regard to election and voting controversies; (2) misuse of executive branch authority and the adoption and implementation of the so-called unitary executive theory, including in the areas of presidential signing statements and regulatory authority; (3) misuse of investigatory and detention authority with regard to U.S. citizens and foreign nationals, including questions regarding the legality of the administration’s surveillance, detention, interrogation, and rendition programs; (4) manipulation of intelligence and misuse of war powers, including possible misrepresentations to Congress related thereto; (5) improper retaliation against administration critics, including disclosing information concerning CIA operative Valerie Plame, and obstruction of justice related thereto; and (6) misuse of authority in denying Congress and the American people the ability to oversee and scrutinize conduct within the administration, including through the use of various asserted privileges and immunities.
EVEN THOUGH WE WON ELECTIONS AFTER TRYING TO IMPEACH NIXON AND LOST AFTER AVOIDING IMPEACHING REAGAN, AND EVEN THOUGH NO AMOUNT OF HUMAN BLOOD COULD DISTRACT ME FROM THE SUPREME IMPORTANCE OF ELECTIONS, I'M NOW GOING TO BRAG ABOUT SEVERAL OF BUSH'S AND CHENEY'S IMPEACHABLE OFFENSES I'VE LOOKED OVER IN DETAIL BEFORE REFUSING TO PURSUE THEM. IF THIS MAKES ME LOOK BAD AND HELPS DROP CONGRESS BELOW 9% APPROVAL, I WILL AT LEAST BE ABLE TO PLEAD OBLIVIOUSNESS. (1) AS PART OF A MULTIFACETED PROGRAM OF ELECTION FRAUD, BUSH HAS TURNED THE FORMER JUSTICE DEPARTMENT INTO THE ELECTION CONTROL OFFICE OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. (2) THE GAO HAS FOUND THAT IN MANY CASES BUSH HAS VIOLATED THE LAWS HE CLAIMED THE RIGHT TO VIOLATE IN SIGNING STATEMENTS. THIS WOULD BE AN OPEN-AND-SHUT IMPEACHMENT HEARING IF I GAVE A RAT'S ASS ABOUT THE RULE OF LAW OR THE SEPARATION OF POWERS. (3) WHILE TORTURE HAS ALWAYS BEEN UNEQUIVOCALLY ILLEGAL AND ABSOLUTELY BANNED REGARDLESS OF THE SITUATION, I HAVE "QUESTIONS" ABOUT WHETHER BUSH'S AND CHENEY'S TORTURING OF PEOPLE IS LEGAL. (4) BUSH LIED US INTO WAR, THE EVIDENCE IS OVERWHELMING, BUT I'LL TREAT IT AS IN DOUBT. (5) TREASON IS NOT A TOP CONCERN RIGHT NOW. (6) UNILATERALLY DISARMING BY REMOVING IMPEACHMENT FROM THE CONSTITUTION LEAVES ONE POWERLESS TO GET REQUESTS AND SUBPOENAS COMPLIED WITH, BUT NOT POWERLESS TO WHINE ABOUT IT.
