Leaked picture of US detainee on Wikileaks.
I'm posting links but not putting the picture in this post since some may find the picture disturbing.
Leaked photo of a US detainee showing cheeks wired to protest his conditions, Aug 6, 2004.

The picture is currently on the front page (scroll down): https://secure.wikileaks.org/wiki/Wikileaks

Here's a link that I assume will continue to work even after the picture is moved off of the front page: http://tinyurl.com/5qptk9

2. He supposedly did this to himself as a kind of protest? Is that correct?
Edited on Thu Jul-17-08 12:45 PM by IanDB1
I feel terrible for him whether he did it to himself, or if it was done to him.

I don't know any more about it than you. All I know is what the caption says.

8. We have always had monsters in this country.
Sociopaths who have gloried in the degradation and torture of their fellow man, particularly those whom law and culture have decreed to be inferior and therefore fair game. The real shame of the Bush Administration is not that they ceased to oppose and defend against such monsters, nor that they allowed such monsters to expand and infiltrate all levels of our society. The shame of the Bush Administration is that they have enthroned this kind of behavior as the gold standard of Americanism, to be praised emulated and taught to our children. This is our shame.

9. So the US wired an innocent, peaceful man's cheeks?
Why does America hate innocent, peaceful men and wire their cheeks?

Any way to know what this innocent man is accused of?

13. If another country invaded your country for our natural resources, how "peaceful" would you be?
Edited on Thu Jul-17-08 02:38 PM by 8_year_nightmare
Also, imagine being picked up by these unwanted visitors with guns in the middle of the night, in front of your family, then tortured to give them names. How many "innocent" people can you imagine would be picked up & jailed for, actually, no good reason (because someone gave them your name just to stop the torture)?

Whomever wired his cheeks should be locked up.

25. That's what the Bushies claim.
Which is more plausible: that he did it to himself because he's that crazy, or that the guards/interrogators did it to him, then claimed he did it to himself?

26. Where do you get the information that that was claimed by Bushies?
It was claimed by whoever leaked the picture, and I tend to believe them. Why would somebody leak a picture like this and then protect the interrogators with a lie like that? If they were trying to hide something the interrogators had done, then they wouldn't have released the picture to start with.

14. I wish there was an article for this image
Even a paragraph - some details, no matter how vague. Where is he from? Is he still alive? All that junk in his face could eventually cause infection. What is that white crumbly stuff on his right side?

Damn.

23. Afghan detainees in Australia did this long ago--(we aren't the only white assholes)
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9E01E3DC123BF931A15752C0A9649C8B63

" As many as 40 Afghan asylum seekers, some of whom sewed their lips together last week to protest being held in the arid outback at one of Australia's largest and harshest detention camps, have collapsed from dehydration, according to a statement smuggled out from the detainees and received in Sydney today.

The protesters' reports say 500 detainees, mostly Afghans, of almost 900 Afghan, Iraqi and Iranian immigrants detained at the Woomera camp, including some women and children, have refused water and food despite temperatures of more than 105 degrees. Australian immigration officials estimate that participants number fewer than 200.

The government detains such unauthorized ''boat people,'' most of whom traveled to Australia from the Middle East via Indonesia, at any of six centers around the country until their visas are processed.

But this protest is not about visas, the detainees say in the statement. ''We are requesting that the international community intervene and remove us from Australia's barbaric immigration policy, which locks refugee men, women and children behind razor wires for months and even years at a time,'' reads one statement from the camp, about 340 miles north of Adelaide. ;;;"
snip

from what I understand little has changed since the date of this article, 2002
