LOL -- Whoppi made Elizabeth Hasselbeck cry

Elisabeth Hasselbeck Cries After Sparring With Whoopi Over N-Word

Thursday morning on "The View," during a discussion on the N-word prompted by the revelation that Jesse Jackson used the slur in his controversial Fox News tape, Whoopi Goldberg and Elisabeth Hasselbeck had a heated back-and-forth that ended with Elisabeth in tears.

Whoopi, who earlier in the broadcast had used the n-word repeatedly, sending the censors into overload, argued that the word is only as powerful as a society allows it to be and advocated for using the word to give it new meaning. Elisabeth, meanwhile, felt that she couldn't teach her children not to say the word if her black co-hosts and their children were using the word, arguing that, "we don't live in different worlds."

Whoopi then launched into a heated explanation of why black and white America still remain separate: "It isn't balanced, and we would like it to be, but you have to understand, you have to listen to the fact that we're telling you there are issues, there are huge problems that still affect us," she said.

Elisabeth replied, in tears, "When we live in a world where pop culture then uses that term, and we're trying to get to a place where we feel like we're in the same place, where we feel like we're in the same world...how are we supposed to then move forward if we keep using terms that bring back that pain?"

I recall this has been done a number of times to actually keep people who tell truth

off the air ---

and out of prominent positions.

I haven't seen Whoopie yet on the show --- but trust she is educating viewers . . . ???

:sarcasm:

Right wingers will never understand satire, irony, or any sort of wry humor that doesn't involve someone else getting hurt. Their stuff is all pie in the face, pratfall humor.

Liz, honey, we do live in different worlds. You live in the homogenized world where everyone is the same culture and everyone has a divine right not to be offended by the notion that other people might be different. The rest of us live in a noisy world of cultural friction and hilarious stereotypes and we glory in poking fun at all of it.

I wouldn't change my difficult, funny world for their bland one for anything.

nor the fact that Whoppie made Elisabeth cry.

They had a serious conversation on a subject that divides us - See...I don't like that word, I was taught not to say it, think it, write it, nada! With good reasoning I might add, because as a white type person, I say that word around blacks or whites and risk being fired from job, kicked out of a club, etc. Not so when it's said by a black person.

It's a repugnant word. Jesse Jackson calling Barack Obama a "n----" is disgusting, I would hope AA's would think so too.

63. perhaps, but only if you mistakenly believe that using that word
is ipso facto an insult; it's not. It is a relatively common word, with a number of different cultural significations, within African American culture--significations that sometimes do but often do not have anything to do with the word's significations within the dominant culture (someone could write a LONG paper about the way, for example, Zora Neale Hurston uses it in her writing). This is a fact often lost on people outside the group because, as in all subcultures, things happen intragroup that are never expressed outside it.

66. It does seem a little hypocritical
for someone who referred to it as an insult and "degrading terminology" and called for a voluntary ban of the word.

http://cbs2chicago.com/local/jesse.jackson.michael.2.333693.html

At Monday's news conference, Jackson and others said the insult highlights issues of racial problems in America.

"We will challenge and urge all artists and comics to stop using this word," Jackson said. "What other group is subjected to such a degrading terminology?"

69. and that has nothing to do with whether the word is inherently insulting
simply because Mr Jackson has said so previously doesn't make it so. And you'll notice the context in which he asked for the ban: in public, for entertainment purposes. Mr Jackson had reason to believe that his use of the word was a private iteration (that was made public) with someone who shares the same subcultural understandings as him.

The word is offensive to me no matter who says it and Jesse Jackson comes off as a big time hypocrit for using it the way he did. I can't imagine any Obama followers saying what Jesse said was ok because he's black. Flame away.

I taught my son and I teach my students that it is a horrible word. However, there is the real world they have to live in and I also am honest and tell them it is one of those times where the saying, "Do as I say, not as I do," applies. There are different rules for different folks. Just me being cynical.

I think Elisabeth was just trying to garner sympathy for her ignorant position. I don't believe she's sincere at all. That's not the first time she's tried to say that there are no differences between being black and white in the US. Such arrogance! Whoopie straightened her out last time too. She acts like a victim so they'll go easy on her, but that's all it is, an act.

We're giving words entirely too much power, especially on the left.

The constant debate about words is a major distraction from real issues.

46. What will that accomplish?
With that keep young black men out of prison and off death row in disproportionate numbers?

Will it ensure that a qualified black applicant is hired for a front office position?

Will it mean that a young black family will have their mortgage approved as easily as a young white family, or be approved for an apartment in a decent neighborhood?

Will it mean that police will end the undocumented "illegal" activity of DWB, driving while black?

I think we have to remember that the force of racism is in ACTIONS not in words. The focus of fighting for justice in the world should be actions, not symbols.

Oh my....well, I would feel differently if I felt Elizabeth Hasslebeck was genuinely upset about the subject...but I get the impression that she always makes herself into the victim whenever someone says something she disagrees with. She comes off as terribly immature to me. So, when I'm faced with the decision of whether to have sympathy for someone who says things like (re:whether McCain is pale)"So, they said that Obama was too black!", re:black churches "Not fair, I mean, why aren't there all white churches!", and comparing gay marriage to someone marrying a toaster...um, I'll choose to totally laugh my ass off! 51. Oh, NOOOOOOOO!
Poor Elisabeth! She's going to have to wait for the RNC BlastFax to arrive for a counterpoint, won't she?

She's odious, and I'll never be convinced those tears were out of sadness. She is beaten, yet again, by women with exponential IQ points on her.

Julie

57. Let me try

Whoopi's point is that using the word within a subcultural context connotes a different signification than in a dominant cultural context (i.e., gay men saying "queer" is different than a homophobe saying it).

Elisabeth is saying that words are ALL. EQUAL. If Whoopi can use a word--and she shouldn't use the word, anyhow!--then Elisabeth herself should be able to use it too! No fair that different rules apply to different groups because we "live in the same world." Oh, and besides that, what will we tell the chirrun? How can I explain it to my blond younguns?

73. she cries for her own stupidity
she cries because she knows that she touts the republican line without thinking, an as she was realizing that we are indeed in this together, her facade fell away and her heart began to liberally bleed. I was once engaged in a spout off with oil man, croaking and crowing about his SUV and his carefree lightheartedness that we would not run out of oil in his life time. And before I could say a word I realized that for me to express my point of view, as a steward of this planet and mother to children, whose future I would like to be able to count on for them, for me to express anything, I needed to weep, and I told him, "When you talk about alaska drilling, and gasoline and mocking tree huggers, you do not consider others so you do not feel like crying"

79. How ironic
for Elisabeth to cry over a topic she doesn't understand. :eyes: She whines about equality when she got a position for which she's obviously unqualified because of her name.

for Elisabeth--

80. Compassion can be elusive
Total abstract thought requires the ability to start with nothing and end with something
without outside influence.
