A burned baby bear needs help!
A few days ago, a local forester found a burned baby bear in the woods. He took it to a wildlife rescue place, and they are currently asking for donations to help nurse this baby back to health!

Here's a link to the original article about the bear:

Please kick and recommend this thread, and help out in any way you can!

23. no "the" in Smokey Bear :)
from Wikipedia

Smokey Bear (often wrongly referred to as Smokey The Bear) is a character in the longest running public service campaign in United States history. The character's mission is to raise public awareness to protect American forests. Since the campaign's inception, the area lost annually has gone from from 22 million to 4 million acres (89,000 to 16,000 km²).<1>

Smokey Bear's message "Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires" was created in 1944 by the Ad Council. In a recent study, 95% of those surveyed could finish the sentence when given the first words. In April 2001, Smokey's message was updated to "Only You Can Prevent Wildfires." <2>

Smokey's correct full name is Smokey Bear. In 1952, songwriters Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins had a hit with "Smokey The Bear". The pair said that "the" was added to Smokey’s name to keep the song's rhythm. This small change has caused confusion among Smokey fans ever since.<3> Note that, from the beginning, Smokey's name was intentionally spelled differently from the adjective smoky.

The fictional character Smokey Bear is administered by three entities: the United States Forest Service, the National Association of State Foresters, and the Ad Council. Smokey Bear's name and image are protected by U.S. federal law, the Smokey Bear Act of 1952 (16 U.S.C. 580 (p-2); 18 U.S.C. 711), which provides for actual imprisonment for those who manufacture goods depicting Smokey Bear without having secured a license from the government.<4>

12. He is :)
They are going to update the website tonight or tomorrow morning after the vets get done with him. The plan right now is to rehab him back into the wild, but he is only 8.5 lbs now so it will be a long road ahead. I will try to update you all as i can :)

I had to go to the support link on the sidebar to get my donation through. I don't think they probably generally get very much traffic to their site.

11. I'll pass the word around my division at WVU
aka the division of Forestry and Natural Resources. Most of the students I've met (and probably quite a few faculty, for that matter) here, regardless of major, have a soft spot for bears. We're ramping up for school to start in a month and should be able to get the word out.

28. New pic of the bear from msnbc
It looks like the ltwc had their hands full last night (I spoke with them yesterday and they aren't used to having tiny bears) so there was no update posted on their website, but this msnbc article has pics of the cub with his booties on, which the woman who runs the place says is a great (and rare) thing.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25741706/

I am trying to leave them alone, since I got the press after them yesterday in hopes that we can get this thing more coverage, but I will let ya'll know as soon as I hear anything.

36. Big Update :)
Here's a nice "kick" for you. Looks like we may get some funding for this little guy and the others out of this! The Ellen show has been contacted and he was on FoxNews last night -- no jabs, this is about the bear ;) and it was the only one of the big three that I could figure out how to submit the story to :( Adam sends his best, but he, like all the firefighters, is exhausted. They appreciate your support and prayers.

Here's the best, new pics of his looking great. Evidenly HE (found that out yesterday) is a black bear, just like the original Smokey. They are having website issues, but it's worth it to see him looking so much better!
