I am disappointed at DU this morning...
...for sure. Didn't anyone here watch Al Gore on Meet the Press? He was EXCELLENT !

I know MTP is not a favorite here...but Gore usually is. What happened? BTW, he has been on C-Span repeatedly...they covered his talk to Netroots nation yesterday. Also great. And almost no one here is discussing it.

What's the deal??

1. Well, sometimes we need sleep
I slept until 8:30 this morning and I feel great. My health and well being is more important than MtP. Besides, it's always replayed sometime or other on CNBC and/or MSNBC. Thanks for the info. I will try and catch the replay.

2. By the way...
...he was asked (again) about a position in an Obama administration, and about running for president in the future, and his answer was funny. He said (paraphrasing) that he had already been elected to that office, but did not serve. :7 It was a great moment... quieted Brokaw right down. :)

4. There's just not so much to talk about at DU when something's good
Most folks here like to rant and rave about what they don't like more/disagree with rather than discuss what is generally liked and approved of. Not much to argue about re: Al Gore lately... he's spot on and delivering an important message.

5. I'm surprised too. I was just doing a search to see if anyone started a thread. BTW-I was
disappointed with him when Brokaw questioned him about Shrub and the speeches that Gore gave about him. Gore tried to avoid the questions and by doing so, appeared to back down from saying that Shrub deliberately lied us into war, etc. I am also disappointed that Gore admitted going to the WH to meet with Shrub after he won the Nobel Peace Prize. Shrub should be Shunned.

10. My LTTE to MTP...
Edited on Sun Jul-20-08 12:51 PM by YvonneCa
...today:

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Thank you for your interview this morning with former Vice President, Al Gore. It was a good discussion, and an important topic for our country. While I have a lot of respect for both the Vice President and Tom Brokaw (whom I have watched for many years, and who did a good job representing the talking points for the other side on EVERY issue he raised), I completely agree with Al Gore’s position in this morning’s discussion.

I believe Al Gore to be a visionary leader. He looks at problems currently faced by our country and sees long-term, transformative solutions, and he sees the opportunity these problems also present to our nation.

On the issues of high gasoline/oil prices, our faltering economy, and our current shaky level of national security… he is able to see the connection between these events, and the solutions needed to address them simultaneously. He argues for big change…and he is right that now is the time to begin.

Our infrastructure (electricity grid, water systems, rail and freeway systems, many downtown areas, etc.) needs a major overhaul and modernization. We are threatened by the current system of energy in two ways…it may be manipulated or cut off (which affects both our economy and our national security, if we go to war to retain it), AND we are ruining our life sustaining planet. To use Al Gore’s words in “An Inconvenient Truth”… it’s our only home.

If we, as a country commit to the former Vice President’s plan, we will never again have to go to war for oil. Our national security will be enhanced. Our environment will also become more inhabitable for a longer period of time (and this is true, whatever you believe about global warming). Building the new infrastructure…transportation, energy grids, green buildings, new solar/wind industry, etc… will get our economy back on track because of the jobs it will create. It’s the kind of ‘stimulus package’ we really need to do the job.

But more important to our future than all that, I believe, we will once again have the chance to be seen as a leader for something positive in the world… and without that, our future looks pretty dim.

So I agree with everything Al Gore had to say this morning on Meet the Press. And, despite Mr. Brokaw’s best effort to sting him with questions about every right-wing talking point currently out there in the media and cyberspace, the former Vice President only made one mistake. It’s a statement with which I completely disagree. When asked about whether he was interested in a position in an Obama administration, or future position as President himself, Al Gore quipped that he had already been elected… but that he did not serve.

Mr. Vice President… I absolutely agree that you were elected. And what a loss for the country that you were not permitted to be in the White House. But I’ve been watching and listening to your many (mostly uncovered) speeches. You did serve after 2000… and, to this grateful American, you are continuing to serve today.

7. I was really annoyed with Brokaw and his petty interview style. The lack of respect is amazing.
I saw it and was very impressed with Al Gore. I also watched Obama on Face the Nation. The interviewer was much more professional.

12. I don't do tv news or talk shows.
I watched "Pay it Forward" this morning. I think it was on TBS. With the usual box of tissue needed every time I've seen it.

I was more moved than any politician or talking media head will ever accomplish.

To answer the root of your question: I don't take the talk seriously. I usually don't like what I hear. I'll read it in print, sometimes nod my head, sometimes show it my finger, and wait to see what the speaker actually DOES, which speaks louder than any political rhetoric.

I do appreciate Gore's work on climate change.

That begs a question: what constitutes the most effective, efficient, support?

24. That is a very good...
...question. From my point of view, the main reason we Democrats have struggled to get our ideas supported (other than media incompetence or complicity), is that our message doesn't reach enough people and that CAUSES a gap in peoples' understanding of our true motives. Our ideas are usually GREAT. We have trouble when the spin starts.

That is my way of saying that the more of us who write about/discuss/communicate/get involved in what Al Gore's plan really is, the better chance he has of success. He said a million bloggers needs to grow to ten million. He also wants us to participate at wecansolveit.org .

So, WAKE UP, DU ! :7 JMHO

30. I'll pay a visit to wecansolveit.
Meanwhile, I'm thinking that, as it takes tremendous time and force to move the monolithic powers that be, while that effort is going on we need to change what can be done sooner, and more easily, relatively speaking: our own lives first, and then our neighborhoods, communities, etc..

All of that talking out...if we are talking out about the changes WE are making, about what we are doing to reduce our own carbon footprints, one at a time, we can generate more energy, and more hope.
