FORD CENTENNIAL
Model T prepares to celebrate 100 years
BY SARAH A. WEBSTER • FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER • JULY 20, 2008

To Richmond or Bust!

By now, hundreds of passionate Model T owners and their families will have descended upon the quaint town of Richmond, Ind., with its 39,000 or so residents, white picket fences and friendly flag-decorated porches, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the car that, quite seriously, changed the world.

Most of the visitors -- 904, according to the Model T Ford Club -- are planning to bring their Model T's with them, so they can ride together, caravan-style, along the flat, rural roads of Wayne County, Ind., which are about as close as you can get to driving early 20th Century-style.

Model T Runabouts, Roadsters, Speedsters, Touring cars and the like are being shipped and hauled into the small town from 44 states and countries including Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany, Norway, New Zealand, Portugal and Brazil.

Couples like Chuck and Ginger Mitchell of St. Clair Shores have been making plans for years to attend the event.

"If you want to have fun in an old car, the Model T is it," said Chuck Mitchell, 65, who is also a volunteer Model T mechanic at Greenfield Village. He was planning to haul his 1925 Model T Roadster to Richmond on Saturday.

The engine wasn't very efficient — 20 HP out of 177 cubic inches (2.9 L for you young'uns) driving a 1,200-pound car.

2. Happy birthday, Tin Lizzie; also known as Flivver.
Definitely changed the world we live in, in many ways.

If you ever get a chance, visit the Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village.

3. I passed
I passed on a nice 26-27 coupe complete body near me a few months ago - too many project cars already.

I love street rodded phone booth T's!

I've been past the old plant in Detroit. I think its abandoned now, but the building where they were all made is still around, I think?

6. You could have it in any color you wanted
... as long as it was black.
