Poll question: Do you have a problem with the way war profiteers make a living, yes or no?
Edited on Sun Jul-20-08 01:09 PM by Philosoraptor
Yes, I think war profiteering is the single most loathsome and monstrous way a person could possibly make massive wealth, selling arms to anyone, killing a million Iraqis and killing 4000 American soldiers, and permanently crippling and blinding 80,000 more, using the military and making massive profits from human death and misery, you bet your ass I have a problem with it, especially when it's the fucking president and his baby sitters doing it while the economy tanks, you bet your ass I have a problem with it thank you very fucking much, or, no, everybody has to make a living somehow, why should I give a damn?

....follow up question:

Would JESUS approve of war profiteering?

10. Everyone should read that
It's the plain truth of the matter, and it certainly enlightened me.

Here's a link for those that haven't seen it: http://www.lexrex.com/enlightened/articles/warisaracket.htm

2. Could you define "war profiteer"?
Do you mean the investors in KBR?

Anyone who gets a re-enlistment bonus from the military?

Union workers building airplanes for Boeing?

7. okay, thanks
The way "making a living" was used I wasn't quite sure.

I definitely feel the same as you do.

Unfortunately, with the way our economy is, a lot of working-class people could possibly be defined as "war profiteers".

4. Hoarding vital commodities
like food and water is even worse, IMO, as is the financial equivalent of driving up the prices through predatory speculation.

The result of both "incomes" is misery and death for a lot of good people who had nothing to say in the matter.

6. Oh hell yes.
Why should they profit from our misery?

I'd call for a complete freeze of their entire assets and war profiteers be held responsible for the war.

Chimp's grandfather was a war profiteer, and got caught trading with the Nazis.

I wish Preston would have been sentenced to death for high treason.

9. It's even more egregious when it's our own congress members
The Investors: Lawmakers with the most money invested in companies with Department of Defense contracts

Member of Congress Minimum Value of Investment Maximum Value of Investment
Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass) $28,872,067 $38,209,020
Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ) $12,081,050 $49,140,000
Rep. Robin Hayes (R-NC) $9,232,037 $37,105,000
Rep. James Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Wis) $5,207,668 $7,612,653
Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif) $2,684,050 $6,260,000
Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich) $2,469,029 $8,360,000
Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WVa) $2,000,002 $2,000,002
Rep. Tom Petri (R-Wis) $1,365,004 $5,800,000
Rep. Kenny Ewell Marchant (R-Texas) $1,163,231 $1,163,231
Rep. John Carter (R-Texas) $1,000,001 $5,000,000

Includes investments in companies with DOD contracts of $5 million or more, according to 2006 data on FedSpending.org. Members of Congress must report their personal finances annually. Holdings shown here were as of December 31, 2006.

Lawmakers' investments in these contractors yielded them between $15.8 million and $62 million in income from 2004 through 2006, through dividends, capital gains, royalties and interest, the Center found. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), who are two of Congress's wealthiest members, were among the lawmakers who earned the most income from these contractors between 2004 and 2006, with Sensenbrenner making at least $3.2 million and Kerry reaping at least $2.6 million.

13. Good comes with Bad
in a freewheeling capitalist system, and war profiteering is just another Trust to finagle, just another monopoly to conquer. War profiteering has driven several major conflicts, a cycle of self-fulfillment that has created new generations of robber barons.

Unfortunately, any business based in the idea that conflict, destruction and chaos must continue in order for the business to thrive is inherently wrong.
