Their efforts to keep their daughters "pure" is sad and misguided, absolutely, because most likely it will backfire magnificently (much like the abstinence only teaching my parents imparted on my sister and me back in the day!) but the sight of a father embracing his daughter in a loving way shouldn't automatically make us think he is some creepy fiend. Children, boys and girls, need affection from both parents to grow up well. If anything, having a good, loving relationship with their fathers will make it easier for them to make better choices when they do become sexually active.

The only time I ever heard my father discuss sex re his daughters was the day my youngest sister asked him if she could attend a catholic camp for a weekend. When she showed dad the programme, there was a talk by a priest about sexual behaviour - dad laughed until tears ran down his face after asking her what the priest could tell her about sex since he was supposed to be celibate. He went on to tell her that if he knew anything he should be excommunicated. My very catholic mother was not amused but we sure laughed with dad that day. Of course he let her go anyway but we still laugh at that joke.

My mother was the one who gave us advice re sexual matters and her advice was very simple. Don't let any boy have sex with you in the back of a car because you'll live with that memory and don't bring him here until you are employed or in college. Once we were grown up, when we returned home on holidays during college, we were allowed to bring our boyfriends. My parents weren't prudes.

I've spend over 20 years in public education and the vast majority of those kids that "try" to stay pure due to some outside pressure ending up going crazy sexual by their senior year.

Far better is to help instill in young women a strong sense of self esteem; that is best achieved through loving parenting (and that can be by any loving parenting figures - not just birth parents) and providing strong boundaries as role models.

Teaching healthy choices is about taking responsibility - just say NO does not work. Listening to our daughters, making special time for them, involving them in sports and extra curricular activities where they can experience success - those things lead to becoming strong women. The same goes for boys too. Sex can be a beautiful thing (or a very hurtful thing), and teaching kids to make wise choices around it is far better then trying to avoid it. Most teens do not want to avoid it.

This purity bullshit achieves the opposite effect. There are no quick fixes or short cuts.

In high school I was the one person out of my circle of about 10 acquaintances and casual friends who didn't do True Love Waits. 10 years later, out of all of them, I'm the one who actually successfully abstained.
