Once again, hip hop proves to be one of the truest forms of social commentary
So I just purchased the new Nas album, "Untitled," and like most of Nas' work it totally blew me away. This isn't "bling bling" club rap fodder (not that there's anything wrong with that either, but it's almost an entirely different genre from true hip hop), it's soulful and moving commentary on life in the world today. Nas doesn't hold back anything about politics, the media, and the overarching theme throughout is race relations in America today. What's great is the rebellious streak this album has. For those who don't know the back story, the album was originally going to be titled "Nigger." Of course, this led to a huge controversy, because when a white guy uses that word for a book title it's thoughtful and inspiring, but when a black man tries to use it for a rap album about racism in America it's "degrading" and "atrocious." So eventually they just made the album untitled, because as Nas said in an interview, "everyone knows what the real name of the album is."

Seeing as how our friends at Fox Noise and the MSM are so popular right now, here's the lyrics from the track "Sly Fox."

So we look at what's going on -- this as an EXTREME aggression, um
I'm also hearing about it from EVERYWHERE!

1. gibberish
mayby showing my age and lack of cultural awareness, but im not seeing this as one of the great pieces of societal changing writing. Reads like one of those crazy Psych tests were someone says something nonsensical and you reply equally with nonsense.

8. I don't see where the OP claims it is a landmark or societal changing
it's more of the insightful and speaking the truth commentary

think it's "culture" or some such bullshit.

at different times in history, words similar to that effect have been used to describe just about every music form originated by black americans...and please tell me, what makes a music form "culture;" O erudite critic?

9. Just like any art form, it's not for everyone, so no worries :)
And I never said it was society changing, just that the album was really good and brought up some great points.

I enjoy many art forms, including country music from time to time. Can you recommend some of your favorite country music that includes social commentary? Thanks! :hi:

Beautiful voices, beautiful instrumentation and, often, meaningful social commentary. You? :)

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm gonna check out Taylor Swift on youtube now! :hi:

im not a big fan of the chicks, my wife thinks its crazy, but the singer reminds me of a crazy chick i dated years ago (gives me the willies) and the other blond one looks like my sister. its a wierd psychosis thing, though i do like josh turner as well, he writes a great tune, and of course the usual stuff ie cash. but as a foreigner im kinda new to the country stuff. still learning.

18. Just checked out Taylor Swift. Beautiful young woman, nice voice.
Johnny Cash did plenty of social commentary stuff. Here's one of my favorites: "The Man in Black"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCqpPj87ekE

The Man In Black
Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.

I find it depressing when people resort to song lyrics as social commentary. I think THAT in and of itself is a sad commentary on where our world is now.

29. Works of art have been forms of social commentary for centuries.
When you think about it, music is just poetry with a tune set to it. And poetry has been social commentary since the days of Shakespeare and even before that. Using song lyrics to discuss social issues is no different than using paintings, plays, movies, or anything else. It's not just a recent thing.

32. maybe just a bias
But I have a hard time thinking of the current hip-hop, gangsta folks as being insightful social commentators. "911 is a joke" was a great song. I got that one. But today's music is so full of hatred and bigotry and womanizing and cussing. I can't listen to it anymore.
