Autism Groups Plan Protest Of Savage In NYC
Conservative Radio Jock Ignites Firestorm After Calling Autistic Children 'Brats,' 'Morons' On Syndicated Show
Monday Rally Planned At WOR Studios In Manhattan
By JEFF CAPELLINI & LEE KUSHNIR, WCBSTV.com
NEW YORK (CBS) ― Conservative radio host Michael Savage will have his hands full on Monday.

In response to his controversial comments about children with autism, Autism United and angry parents will hold a major protest outside WOR Radio studios in Manhattan on Monday afternoon, CBS 2 HD has learned.

They will be calling for the firing of the radio jock and asking for a boycott by parents of children with autism of all stations carrying his signal. Savage outraged the autism community recently by saying 99 percent of children suffering with autism are "brats" and "morons" on his national syndicated radio show.

During the July 16 edition of his show, Savage claimed that autism is " fraud, a racket. ... I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, 'Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot.' "

3. It's one thing when these asshole attack people who can fight back
But to attack those with Autism is just horribly cruel. These are children & adults that have no voice they can use to fight back and rely on the parents, friends and supporters to tell this man to go rot in hell!

13. i take from your post that you have a son with autism
as the parent of a 13 year old son with autism i have to say that my outrage at savages comments is only over ridden by
my amusement at the thought of somebody like savage trying deal with my son. his fucking head would blow up.
his suggestions that parents tell their kids to stop acting like morons is classic.
i would personally give savage $5.00 (american...not euros) to perform his wonder cure on my son. of course i would insist
on retaining the rights to the video.

Yes, I have an autistic son. We were told he couldn't learn and everyone was trying to channel him educationally into inappropriate environments for learning or denying classroom remedy suggestions from us. He now has three associate degrees from NC State University and is working on a four year undergraduate degree.

25. "one size fits all". That was the theme one year when some of
us approached our local school board concerning educational matters. To emphasize our point, we had our children give them all tee shirts (size small) with those words across the front. We won our point and they began to make changes.

Unfortunately, his attitude is shared by too many Americans concerning the Autism spectrum. Many of us worked hard for changes in law for education and job security which now is threatened by the right and their good Christian judges. I'm not ready to just give up on everything without a fight.

33. And there's often been little sympathy for the parents of autistic kids from the medical "pros"
Check out this old belief that Bruno Bettelheim helped spread(it was things like this that led some people to call him "Benno Brutalheim") :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refrigerator_mother

Today, Savage would probably have Bettelheim on as a guest.

On edit: And Bettelheim made his bones at U. of Chicago. I still say that place needs to be razed to the ground and the earth salted with Plutonium, so nothing ever grows there or ventures near there again.

Parenting an autistic child even more so, even without someone calling your child a brat and a moron. The kids suffer and are often bullied because of their differences. And now they have to deal with an adult bully with his own syndicated radio show. Asshole. Savage should pick on someone his own size.

and many denied he actually said it claiming that media matters lied about it. Then there was the fact that they had the audio recording. d'oh. Some claimed it was taken out of context, some claimed it was an impersonator that they hired to make him look bad, then they moved on to saying he was exaggerating to make a point. Then they talked about how he has a PhD so he knows what he's talking about and just being bombastic to drive the point home. Then many personal stories about their own learning disabilities.

Such fun these freeper threads:

62. Well, Rush Limbaugh sneered at Michael J. Fox over his Parkinson's disease
They don't believe in any diseases except those that THEY have. Rush was perfectly happy to have a cochlear implant to treat his hearing impairment; but if it had been someone else, it would no doubt just have been an excuse to get money and sympathy.

There is certainly a disease that many of them have - but unfortunately, there isn't a really effective treatment for psychopathy.

54. Actually, he didn't. You're gonna love Savage Weiner's take on asthma!
From the same segment last Wednesday:

http://mediamatters.org/items/200807170005?f=h_top

SAVAGE: Now, you want me to tell you my opinion on autism, since I'm not talking about autism? A fraud, a racket. For a long while, we were hearing that every minority child had asthma. Why did they sudden -- why was there an asthma epidemic amongst minority children? Because I'll tell you why: The children got extra welfare if they were disabled, and they got extra help in school. It was a money racket. Everyone went in and was told (fake cough), "When the nurse looks at you, you go (fake cough), 'I don't know, the dust got me.' " See, everyone had asthma from the minority community. That was number one.

exactly what it is. My sister is an asthmatic and to this day i will never forget that sound and my parents rushing her to the hospital for a shot of adrenaline.

Weiner is an idiot and just unworthy of the attention and that imo is exactly what he's looking for, no such thing as bad press and i'm sure that's what he's counting on. Rump Leakage inks a multi bazillion dollar deal, asshat Hannity inks a 100 million dollar deal and i'm guessing he's trying to attract some more attention in the hopes of getting himself some of that huge rw money.

Savage has the wrong diagnosis of the autistic child.

64. The Autism Society of America has also issued this statement condemning Savage's remarks:
ASA statement on Michael Savage Radio Comments
Friday, July 18, 2008
By: Carin Yavorcik

ASA will continue to work to raise awareness

This week, talk show host Michael Savage made inaccurate and derogatory comments about autism on his radio show, calling the condition “a fraud” and the result of a lack of parental discipline. Mr. Savage’s unsubstantiated comments reflect the misconceptions of over 50 years ago that autism was caused by “refrigerator mothers” or unemotional parenting, which have been completely disproven by the scientific community. Autism is a neuro-developmental medical condition that requires early identification and lifelong treatment. For over 40 years, the Autism Society of America has worked tirelessly to educate people on the nature of autism spectrum disorders, the services and support families need, and the tremendous potential of people on the autism spectrum. We are dismayed that these grossly inaccurate remarks would be aired in any platform, much less on a nationally syndicated show. We will continue to work with families, people with autism and the broader public to raise awareness of autism spectrum disorders.

I've listened to him and he's rabid about the over-diagnosis of various conditions in children in order to get them put on drugs, especially ADD. And I agree, too many people just put their kids on drugs that might screw them up for life, all to make the parents' lives easier and make the drug companies more money. A lot of people need to get this message from Dr. Savage (yes, Ph.D., in a field I like, traditional medicine).

Then Savage goes and pulls this BS. Being smart doesn't keep you from being an world class a-hole.

80. I will invoke Godwin's Law and go immediately to the Nazi reference
Edited on Mon Jul-21-08 07:21 PM by DBoon

n October of 1939 amid the turmoil of the outbreak of war Hitler ordered widespread "mercy killing" of the sick and disabled.

Code named "Aktion T 4," the Nazi euthanasia program to eliminate "life unworthy of life" at first focused on newborns and very young children. Midwives and doctors were required to register children up to age three who showed symptoms of mental retardation, physical deformity, or other symptoms included on a questionnaire from the Reich Health Ministry.

A decision on whether to allow the child to live was then made by three medical experts solely on the basis of the questionnaire, without any examination and without reading any medical records.

Each expert placed a + mark in red pencil or - mark in blue pencil under the term "treatment" on a special form. A red plus mark meant a decision to kill the child. A blue minus sign meant meant a decision against killing. Three plus symbols resulted in a euthanasia warrant being issued and the transfer of the child to a 'Children's Specialty Department' for death by injection or gradual starvation.

The decision had to be unanimous. In cases where the decision was not unanimous the child was kept under observation and another attempt would be made to get a unanimous decision.

The Nazi euthanasia program quickly expanded to include older disabled children and adults. Hitler's decree of October, 1939, typed on his personal stationery and back dated to Sept. 1, enlarged "the authority of certain physicians to be designated by name in such manner that persons who, according to human judgment, are incurable can, upon a most careful diagnosis of their condition of sickness, be accorded a mercy death."

from : http://www.historyplace.com/worldwar2/timeline/euthanasia.htm

To get to a point where a society is capable of murdering its sick and disabled requires a lot of instigators like Mike Savage

Most autistic kids are very quiet and shy. It's all those "so called" perfectly normal kids that run around the store screaming and spitting on each other that act like brats and morons. Primarily cause their so "normal."

I always hate when parents justify their children's behavior by saying, he just a typical kid. No your parenting skills are just garbage.

He was asking questions about the date, or about what kind of car I drive. I'd answer, and then he'd ask again, and he'd ask his dad or his mom, or he'd ask the next person he meets, over and over, and over again.

Sorry, but I went out of my way to avoid him the second or third time. Even after a couple of seconds, I know I couldn't handle living with that kid. I'll leave that to the trained professionals.

I just wonder what would happen if somebody called him a putz, or a moron. Does he really think that's going to "fix" this kid?

Station nixes 'Savage Nation'
Radio host called autism a 'fraud, a racket'
