The only place I've ever seen a cowboy hat in NH is in the Great North Woods. Wearing a cowboy hat anywhere else around here just screams "RightWing Gasbag". Don't try to talk sense into them; they're not made for that.

nice, new jeans with no holes in them, unscuffed boots, cowboy hat that isn't marred and dirty
I grew up in cowboy country, I know this stuff.....
the only exception is of course a cowboy who just came out of Bebo's or TSC with new clothes haha.
I see pretend cowboys around rodeo season.....all week they are wearing business suits and preppy clothes, at the rodeo you see them in the stands with the all new cool looking cowboy attire, trying to look western..it's not fittin to stare at them, but I do

16. Sad thing is
most real cowboys wear baseball caps now instead of cowboy hats. Most CB hats are so expensive they save them for shows. You will see the occasional CB hat when it is worn out and beat down.

29. I live in cowboy country
and the people around here who wear 'em are Mexicans who wear the straw ones and fat cat real estate barons who wear them out on the town and when they're flying out on vacation.

You don't see them on the street, not even in feed stores out in the boonies.

Mexicans wear the straw ones while they're outdoors, doing all the grunt work.

38. It is odd
isn't it? They really should not be considered cowboy hats anymore.

We still have real cowboys here too, I have ridden with them out on the herds. It totally blew my mind the first time I saw the "modern" cowboy posting a trot with a ball cap talking to his wife on a cell phone all the while prepping his horse for his turn in the cutting pen. I retired my cowgirl hat mostly in favor of a ball cap. Much cheaper alternative and that is probably the reason the real cowboys have as well. The fat cats always ruin everything.

I do like the straw hats. Good choice for hard labor in the sun.

19. While I've never lived in texas,
I've grown up with horses, and I don't wear cowboy hats, either.

I wear baseball caps; I can stuff my hair through the opening at the back and keep it off my neck. A cowboy hat is more likely to go flying off my head every time a breeze blows, unless I attach a choker to it.

I really should have a good cowboy hat for longer days on the horse, though. They DO keep sun and rain off better than a baseball cap.

What is your reason for wearing a cowboy hat? Is it a fashion statement? If so, what statement is made by wearing a cowboy hat, which is part of western ranch culture and dress?

62. the John Deere cap is considered formal wear here.
A cowboy hat is too hot, and gets knocked off when working with horses. They like to chew on stuff like hats. A ball cap is more practical when cutting tobacco. A large brimmed hat will get blown off or knocked off by the tobacco stalks. A cowboy hat acts like a sail. It's a fucking drag having to stop the tractor, get off and chase the stetson that has become a play thing for the dog that was following the tractor. They like going after the mice stirred up by the cultivator, but a hat tumbling across a field is just too enticing.

63. All true.
Around here, I don't see many ranchers wearing them. The guys doing the local rodeo circuit wear them. It wouldn't be a rodeo event if the cowboy didn't have to chase down his hat when he was done.

I sunburn easily; my best hat for sun is a wider-brimmed straw gardening hat with strings to tighten under the chin. I can't be bothered with climbing up and down repeatedly to chase down the hat. The older I get, the shorter I wish my horse was. ;)

Which is why I usually wear a baseball cap.

34. The late, great Shaw's chain, ruined by Masshole owners.
Shaw's was THE place to get edible fresh produce in Ptld back when it was a locally owned chain. Hannaford's Shop 'n' Save was more like IGA. Then Shaw's was purchased by Brockton Public Market, a chain with such a shitty reputation that they immediately rebranded all of their stores Shaw's. It's gone down hill ever since.

Hannaford started coming up in the world when cranky Mainiacs drifted over from the new, inferior Shaw's and noticed that all of a sudden Hannie's had the better fresh food.

42. Location does matter, but the original Shaw's was VERY good at fresh food.
Vegetables, meats, fish were always fresher and presented better than most other supermarkets. The old chain was one of the early adopters of the move back to unpackaged produce and fish on ice rather than everything packaged ahead of time on trays with cellophane wrap.

First it was the BPM, later the Star markets that were rebranded as Shaws. Shaws is really a very different chain now.

45. Really? Wow.
I think Shaw's days in Portland are numbered. Hannaford's is a great supermarket, and has actually responded well to the new giant Whole Foods we have. Plus with the farmer's markets and the sudden explosion of small local grocery/bakeries/butchers all over Portland, I just can't see Shaw's having much to offer most Portlanders. Only the older generations still go there. No one I know my age (and I mean not one single person) goes to Shaws.

The pants around the hips is usually worn by people who CAN afford health club memberships, good fresh foods, and clothes that fit properly. In this part of Texas it's all about denial.

Yes, I know those are daisies, but in times like this, any flower will do. ;-)

52. If you look for angry disagreements, you will find them.
If you're getting into arguments with strangers at the grocery store and while driving your car, it's time to ask yourself if the problem is YOU.

People who leave the house every day looking for conflict usually find it.

You might want to think about taking an anger management class. This isn't about politics, it's about you and your explosive demeanor, as evidenced by your title to this thread.

55. You have NO idea what it is like to live here in a small town where
letters to the editor call people out and people are called nazi's at selectmen meetings. Plus, you don't know me at all, so hold your judgement before you start preaching. You are not my therapist. You know NOTHING about running into over the top nutcases who stalk you just because you disagree with them. And obviously, you know nothing about my sense of humor and neither did you read the entire thread.

59. I know what you post here, and that's all I'm basing my comments upon.

You are an angry person, and you express that anger here almost daily.

You find conflict because you want to find conflict.

Anyone who says they want to cut someone's fucking heart out needs to think about what they're saying. You seem to relish your anger, and you love to talk about it. That's what I can see from your postings at DU. I'm suggesting that if you really want to do something about these fights you get into, you'll have to work on your conduct and accept that you're creating these fights you have with others.

As for your therapist, if you have one, I'm sure she'd agree with my assessment of your need to express anger and have conflicts. It's possible to have strong political beliefs without constantly getting into fights with strangers over it.

60. I find the Ignore function to be a snappy little device
You may want to try it.

Manage Ignore List

Block Private Messages: Selecting this option will prevent a member from sending private messages to you. If the member tries to send you a private message, it will appear to them that your inbox is closed to all private messages. They will see the following error: "That member does not wish to receive private messages."

Ignore Threads: Selecting this option will prevent you from seeing any threads started by a member. You will still be able to see the member's replies to other threads. The member will not know that you are ignoring their threads.

Ignore Replies: Selecting this option will prevent you from seeing all replies made by a member anywhere on the message board. It does not hide their threads, but if you wish to ignore all of a member's posts, you can use this option in combination with the "Ignore Threads" option. The member will not know that you are ignoring their posts.

58. OMG I can SOOOO get a mental picture of that guy!

They're swarming around my small town too, although they don't wear cowboy hats 'round these parts--they wear plastic mesh baseball-type caps. And yes indeedy, their guts hang over their belt buckles and they are ALWAYS running on about how Dubya's "kept us safe from them terra-ist towelheads" etc.
:puke:

You have my deepest sympathy, GW. Go git 'em!

70. Mike Barnicle (not exactly a liberal) says people in NH are the lowest form of life
He thinks people here are a bunch of ignorant rednecks with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I couldn't agree with him more.

71. An art dealer I know from here told me that the poor and stupid visit NH
while the wealthy and educated go to VT and ME.

You have to be a little more hardcore to live in these types of mountains.

78. You find the same kind of people in NH that you found here in FL
It's all due to the lack of a State income tax, or so I've been told.
