Sen. Joe Lieberman is set to deliver a speech to this week's Christians United for Israel summit in DC. It won't be the first time. Last year, he attended and compared the group's controversial leader, Pastor John Hagee, to Moses. Now, more than 42,000 people -- organized by J Street and Democracy for America -- have apparently signed a petition (delivered to him today) asking Lieberman to skip it tomorrow, calling it their "Don't Go Joe" campaign.
Arshad Hasan, executive director of Democracy for America argued, "Pastor Hagee is a bigot and a sexist. If Joe Lieberman speaks at his conference, he is giving a seal of approval to a man who thinks it's fine to use fear and hatred to demonize Americans."
Lieberman's friend, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, had accepted an endorsement from Hagee early this year before eventually distancing himself from the pastor after Hagee caught flak for suggesting Adolph Hitler was doing God's will. Lieberman hasn't followed McCain's lead on this, planning to share Tuesday's microphone.
Lieberman said last week that he intended to thank the group for supporting Israel in its conflict with Islamist extremists and he'll "talk about the threat {Islamist extremism} represents to the U.S. and Israel today."
The main thrust of Hagee's group is to "act with one voice in support of Israel in matters related to Biblical issues," because such support is seen to be necessary to hasten the return of Jesus Christ. So, it's in DC to push this agenda, advertising Lieberman with top billing alongside Hagee at its "Night to Honor Israel."
And so, Lieberman is the target of another petition. {It's just not his month for massed signatures.}
