Warning: Auto Warranty Scam |
|
You answer the phone and an automated message tells you: Your auto warranty is about to expire. To prevent a loss in coverage press 1 or something to that affect.
I've gotten called at home maybe 8 times and on my cell 2 times now. It's a scam that has apparently been making the rounds in various parts of the country. (currently the South) They are phishing for credit cards and, according to some reports, drivers license numbers presumably for identity theft.
Once somebody answers they ask for your year and model of car... if you answer with anything else they generally hang up on you. (one time I asked them why they needed that information if they knew my warranty was about to expire.. got hung up on)
Their caller ID's show up as Co, Mo, Oh, etc. but it's all been the same recording.
From what I can tell, this is one of the groups running this scam:
National Auto Warranty Services
100 Mall Pkwy Wentzville, MO 63385 Tel: 636.639.1620

1. I got a series of messages like that with the British country code as their caller ID |
|
I figured that Ford wasn't having somebody in Britain call me to get me to buy a warranty extension, so I never called back.
But it's pretty incredible that they timed it right around the actual expiration of my original warranty.

4. They also mail out those "notices" in rather "official" looking envelopes. |
|
Not sure if it's the same outfit but the scam is identical.

so we were fairly sure something was up with that call. We just laughed at it. It's getting fucking ridiculous by now.
They need a better database, I've never owned one, nor my Aunt, my mom hasn't owned one in about a decade.

7. Burning up my cell phone minutes... |
|
...These scammers have managed to find a way to dial onto the system from a fake source number and their autodialer doesn't even realize it is talking to voice mail. Someone needs to shut these asswipes down. http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-704-824-1393/2

8. TRANSCRIPT: I dared to peek behind the curtain... |
|
Edited on Mon Jul-21-08 07:47 PM by derby378
I got one of those robo-calls a few days ago and pressed "1" to see who it was that was calling me with these expiration notices - they've been calling ginbarn, too, despite the fact that she doesn't have a car. Here's the transcript:
{Phone rings}
Telemarketer: Warranty Services, what is the year, make and model of your car?
derby: I'm sorry, who is this?
Telemarketer: Warranty Services.
derby: I'm looking for the full legal name of your company.
Telemarketer: {Audible sigh} The name of our company is Warranty Services. Do you want to renew the warranty on your car or no?
derby: Just checking, thank you. {Disconnects call}
They seem just a little too evasive and slick for my tastes. That last statement from the telemarketer sounded downright snarky.
I'm such a stinker...

9. We've been getting called every single day, sometimes more |
|
than once a day, for so many months now I couldn't tell you how long. . . at least since March. We just bought a new car last year and the extended warranty for six years. Thank god I don't have a cell phone where I'd have to pay for this harassment. Maybe next time I'll do like the other posted message, but get nasty with them.

19. I press 1 and cuss them out. |
|
What can they do about it? Nothing! I'm on the DO Not Call List, so they are breaking the law just by calling me. I ask for their company name and they refuse to give it out, so I just scream and say nasty things to them. They can't report it - because that would be an admission that they are violating the law.
HAHA.
