Fargo Tries to Resurrect Gang Tax Idea
SACRAMENTO, CA - One week after Supervisor Roger Dickinson withdrew a county-wide gang tax idea because of lack of support, Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo will ask the city council to approve putting the same measure for a sales tax hike on November's ballot.
"If the money is being spent on that program, then good, money well-spent. But if it's not, then somebody's pockets are getting fat. And that's kind of sad," said Robert Lynch of Natomas.
Lynch and his wife Carolyn say since they moved to Natomas Crossing one year ago, they've seen at least four violent incidents involving gangs in the neighborhood. That includes a frightening daytime assault where a dozen men used bats and sticks to damage their neighbor's property.
"They beat all the windows out of their cars and the living room window out. When we called (police) they wouldn't come out. They said they had another incident and couldn't come out. It was disappointing," said Carolyn Lynch.
Fargo said money raised with the higher sales tax, about $16 million each year, would go for more police as well as gang prevention and intervention programs.
