cspan now

"we need 200 mph trains, foreign countries have them,
we have not because of cheap oil, we need a long term PTC"

this is all stuff we can agree with folks.
Need to get over whether he's a prick or not,
and use this momentum to catapult our own message.

1. pickens is making cents.
His epiphany is about profits, for himself.

His environmental responsibility? Too little, far too late.

3. someone has to make money off of it
personally I don't care who does make the money, as long as we get off of oil and turn to renewable energy sources such as wind.

I posted his website the other day, I think it's www.pickensplan.com

4. He wants cars to use our prime home heating fuel source, natural gas.
And thus have us pay 3 or 4 times the price for natural gas due to demand and speculation. He's running a scam, nothing more.

10. Natural gas is no longer sufficiently abundant to use for transport.
We've used up a lot for electrical generation, and we need to stop that as much as possible. We can and do import natural gas by pipeline from Canada, but we receive few tankers of liquefied natural gas from overseas. There are only a handful of ports that can handle the stuff and no one wants a natural gas port near them because the stuff can blow up. Natal gas imported by tanker is also very, very expensive.

We should use natural gas only for the uses that cannot easily be satisfied by other sources. Heating is one of them, although in many areas of the country, that heating could be replaced or augmented by ground or air source heat pumps if the proper conditions exist.

Natural gas is also a prime feedstock for many, many chemicals, including nitrogen fertilizer which now keeps us fed. I think that we should retain the ability to make key chemicals and not rely on overseas and possibly unreliable sources for them. Using our natural gas sparingly would do that.

2. I don't like the old fart, but I'm glad SOMEONE (other than Gore) is trying
to jumpstart a new energy plan. I like Pickens' can-do attitude about it.

5. That's my take exactly...
The only way Energy Conservation is going to get anywhere is if enough people invest enough money to make it profitable.

I'm surprised the big oil companies haven't tried to do more to brand themselves as Energy companies and invest in other areas of generation. But then again, most of these pricks running the Oil Companies are glued to the short term bottom line and can't lift their heads out of the oil wells they have buried themselves in.

7. Yep--Pickens rode the oil wave, sees that it's ending, and wants to be
Edited on Tue Jul-22-08 10:11 AM by wienerdoggie
a pioneer of the next big thing, energy-wise. I don't care that he makes shitloads of money--ALL big and little industrial innovations in the history of this country were to make money in some way. That's the whole point of capitalism--we're all free to build a better mousetrap. People seem pissed that he's not doing it for charity--that is of no importance to me.

8. Hey, if he makes money that means a lot of other people will make money...
And if his project creates a marketplace for clean, viable, renewable energy, I don't see the downside.

11. so pickens is now the DU love child? LOL that's rich.
this guy was one of the fuckers that funded the swift boat vets for "truth".

Please folks, just because a broken clock is right twice a day doesn't mean it's a good time piece.

He can go screw himself sideways.

There are plenty of people out there that don't have the kind of repuke funded PR machine that this moron has that have been yelling about wind power for years, yet they don't get a quarter of the press this self serving opportunist gets.

So please stop feeding into this wind bags self promoting and pay attention to those who have been promoting alternative power for years.

good god.

12. There are plenty of people out there...
with a billion dollars of their own money?

I don't like him either and I can't ignore the swiftboat thing, but what Pickens is doing needs to be done and it's putting people to work in the renewable and alternative energy sector and that is something most DUers agree needs to be done.

He's not too far away from frying in Hell from all he's done- so
I'll let karma take care of his misdeeds.

it's about having someone delivering the message, someone with credibility to the
people who can't hear Gore.
The message is:

drilling won't save us
wind and solar can
we can make money/jobs doing it this way
technology is here now
