Our animal friends live in the moment. They exist right now, and think not about tomorrow. Existence is always threatened, because some other animal is always the enemy of each animal here. Our animals friends therefore live their lives in a "life or death" mode, while we do not. We live lives largely free of such constant threats.
We have the ability to build our fears larger than they are. We have emotions that can spiral out of control, and result in chemical imbalances that make our brain malfunction. We can think ourselves into deep depression and hopelessness.
I think that's why we commit suicide, because we can contemplate and fear endless torment as a physical being on this planet.
