I know I'm a little late, but I HAVE to say a few words about Savage's comments on autism.
I work with kids that are classified as 'ED' or
'emotionally disturbed.' They are kids that could not handle a
regular school, and for whatever reason, ended up at our
program. We are restrictive and tough, but
therapeutic...filling several needs at once. To an outside
observer, the behavior of some of these kids might look
'bratty' or 'childish' or 'crazy'...but that's NOT the issue.
The issue is that these are kids with serious emotional
problems, for whatever reason, and they need the help that a
therapeutic setting can provide.
We do not take autistic kids...there are other programs
for that. However, I have enough knowledge of it to realize
the joys and frustrations in dealing with autism. It is very
real, especially to the families of autistic children, and
what Savage has done is reprehensible. He has taken a very
serious condition and spat on it, out of pure ignorance. He
spits on the families that struggle and do their best to work
with these children. He spits on the teachers, the therapists,
the child care workers who give their all to improve the
situations of these children. He spits on the children
themselves.
This is not the first time that Michael Savage,
disgusting human being and waste of air, has said something
loathsome...but it IS the worst. I can think of few things he
could have said that would be MORE offensive. He fosters
ignorance and intolerance, and mocks the pain and joy of so
many.
It is high past time that he learns that you can't use
the First Amendment as a shield to spew hate on our airwaves.
He is an employee, and therefore, he can be fired. For
autistic children, their families, their therapists and
teachers, I hope that somehow we can find a way to see this
scum removed from the airwaves. Ask his sponsors and
employers: is this the image you want for your company and
station? Is this the kind of hate you want associated with
your brand?
Ask them. Hold them accountable. Hold HIM accountable. It's
about damn time somebody did.

3. I support Michael Savage's RIGHT to spew obnoxious hatred.
That right he does have.
Fortunately, the first amendment does not protect his job. :D

2. Late, but relevant.
There are no words to describe the loathing I have for Michael Savage. At times I would listen to him for cheap thrills because he scared the shit out of me. This guy has an abnormal love for kicking the weak and the disabled. He is an arrogant, stupid, worthless and ruinous bigot, who leads a legion of ditto heads that have no idea the ruin that they so vehemently affirm. And if they do, then Heaven help us. Karma is a beast, be it in this world or the next this man will have much to answer for.

15. As reprehensible as that was, Michael J. Fox is not a child.
Making fun of a child < making fun of an adult.
You have to be a special kind of low to make fun of a kid. Wait, didn't Limbaugh call Chelsea Clinton a dog? Okay, I take it back, Limbaugh's as disgusting as Savage.

7. Are you sure you don't take any kids with autism?
They switched my label to ED once they determined I was reading above grade level. In the early '70s, they could not comprehend that a child with autism could be reading above grade level, rather than being retarded like it said in their textbooks. So, the subject was dropped for many a year, until books by parents and, yes, people with autism themselves started showing up in the early '90s.

8. Well, let's put it this way.
We would not take a kid that is described as autistic. There are some in our program that may have some signs of it, though, or may be high functioning autistic.

12. Lynn Samuels adores listening to Savage
She mentions him often. I'm wondering if that is why she's railed against people who treat their kids for ADHD? Samuels says the same thing as Savage about these kids with ADHD, it's just bad parenting or some such bullshit. I wonder if she keeps her mouth shut now?

14. My best friend has identical twin autistic girls
Edited on Tue Jul-22-08 05:52 PM by Marrah_G
They are not badly behaved. It can be frustrating at times trying to connect and everyone has to be more watchful, but they don't act out in the way emotionally disturbed children I know do. They are both very sweet. One is more functioning then the other and they don't play "together" like you would think twins would. The lower functioning one communicates but often in her own way. She has her own meaning for words and often communicates many related thoughts or emotions with one word or phrase. I don't want that, I don't like that, no, etc are all rolled into one phrase she came up with. All candy or snacks are another phrase. etc etc

Its a challenge, but my friend handles it in stride and the girls are very sweet.

18. I have an autistic son. Tomorrow I'm going to buy martial arts
practice forearm guards for myself because of his spontaneous hitting me for no reason. But I'll take that any day over worrying about having twin daughters who could be sexually abused once they are out of their parents' care.

17. So much of our lives is about my oldest son's autism.
Planning for down the road when we may not be able to handle him any more. The money we spend on therapies that insurance won't cover. Trying to find the best education for his condition, when we ourselves don't fully understand it. Trying to figure out how we will retire when my work has been set aside for his disability, etc.

Savage and others are just intolerant. They don't want to feel like they need to cut any body with a disability any slack for disability. It's a backlash against people who by necessity need others to help them stand up for themselves. Savage is a selfish bastard because he can't be bothered with compassion.

I generally don't believe in The Devil. Savage has me reconsidering that.
