http://www.nationalenquirer.com/sen_john_edwards_caught_with_mistress_and_love_child_in_la_hotel/celebrity/65193

Who knows. Sometimes the National Enquirer gets it right, sometimes they get it way wrong. Hell those sleazy mags have been pushing Laura's divorcing Bush and that Obama cheats.

Hope it's not true. Mainly for Elizabeth.

The Clintonite who owns National Enquirer

The political world has been holding its nose for the last twenty-four hours while peering at the weekly tabloid National Enquirer, which published a story yesterday alleging that presidential candidate John Edwards had an extra-marital affair.

"The story is false," Edwards told reporters in South Carolina today, according to a reporter who was there.

What the tabloid's readers, in politics and out, may not know is that a key owner of the Enquirer is a prominent New York investment banker and one of Hillary Clinton's key backers, Roger Altman. Altman was an official in the first Clinton administration, and his name is often mentioned as a possible Clinton Treasury Secretary.

and a lovechild in Los Angeles last night at a hotel.

No pictures, which seems odd for the National Enquirer.

Also, they called him the "vice-presidential candidate" which makes the story sound four years old.

there as well? Why would they miss an opportunity to take his picture in the hotel? Even if they didn't have their camera's you think somebody would have used a cell phone camera. This story is highly suspect. I don't believe it at all. But what this tells me is that Edwards might be a leading candidate for VP and they are trying to throw a monkey wrench in the pot.

27. Hate to say it, but believe it's true
Honestly, I hate to say it, but Edwards dropped out of the Presidential Race at a very strange time. He dropped out less than a week before Super Tuesday right after both a huge fundraising push and repeated promised that he was going to keep going through the final state. Even if his campaign had determined it was hopeless, he wouldn't have lost much by waiting to drop out until AFTER Super Tuesday.

Which meant to me one of two things:

A. Elizabeth's health was too delicate to support them continuing to campaign.

B. The affair, and even worse the resultant child, had some truth to it.

The rumor of the affair started in October/November, but escalated in January 2008, right before he dropped out.

My belief is that he was given a choice by the oppo researchers from either Clinton or Obama, drop out or we'll release this information, or additional inquiries from LA Times/NY Times or the like.

The confirmation of an affair on his part would have sunk his campaign and reputation. Too many people love Elizabeth, and the fact that she has cancer makes it that much more of a betrayal. He would have been villified with little opportunity to recover.

While I cannot imagine he was this stupid, if he was, he made the correct decision to drop out of the Presidential Race, and the suggestion that he'll be anything in a democratic administration is a lie. He won't be able to go that firmly back into the public eye.

Now, it still appears that the National Enquirer doesn't have the smoking gun. No photos of the two of them together, which still allows this to be just a rumor, hot air and NOT the truth.

I hope that it isn't true, but sex and politics and power go hand in hand.

33. Not being played, just understand politics and the media
Look, I'm not going to say Edwards had an affair. I have no direct knowledge and all we have is innuendo and friend of friend comments.

However, as an Edwards supporter in California, I found the timing of his drop-out suspicious. There wasn't a lot for him to lose if he stayed in through Super Tuesday. In 2004 he was the last hold-out, (and I voted for him because I thought Kerry was a poor choice) so it would keep with that precedent.

But he did drop-out. Yes, the rumors and denials to this story began in October 2007. Without hard evidence, no major paper was going to cover it, so he was likely safe. But you can be sure the other campaigns had opppo resources checking it out. And Edwards in the race on Super Tuesday would have likely hurt Hillary's chances, since at the time they had higher expectations for a clean-up.

I find it possible that one of the campaigns's or friends of, had the information to take to the media but offered Edwards the opportunity to drop-out of the race instead, which he took. (The correct decision)

Frankly, if this story is true, it would have hurt him more than any of the other candidates. I also believe that Hillary has had her own affairs, and the rumors about McCain are pretty much fact. Neither is likely to hurt their chances, just as it didn't to Bill or any of the rest of our former Presidents.

But, Elizabeth rocks and has cancer and there's a potential kid in the mix. And Edwards comes across as a 'good guy.' It would have killed his chances.

more disgusting than the Enquirer and they are pretty low. At least they are "paid" to peddle their smut. You even manage to smear Clinton at the same time.I find it really hard to believe that a real Edwards supporter would lend any credence to this tawdry story.

Since you like to connect the dots so well I suppose the fact that Cate was involved in a very suspicious auto accident less than a few weeks before he dropped out might have contributed to his decision. When you have lost one child to an auto accident in an odd manner the implied threat to another is more than unnerving.John was a huge threat to many corporate entities and we will never know what they may have threatened him with.

The big obstacle to any veracity to your story is Elizabeth herself. She would have drop kicked him and she is still at his side.

And Edwards wasn't forced out to help Hillary's chances. He was shoved out to benefit Obama. And the PTB were stunned that Hillary didn't cave.

I think anyone giving any credibility to this story ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Designed to do damage just by putting made-up shit into the tribal atmosphere. It's the Enquirer -- so consider the "source."

One minute the right wing is impugning Edwards' masculinity with sobriquets like "Breck Girl," then they turn around and try to nail him for skirt-chasing.

Note that there's not one photo of the two together, nor any statements from actual people. A Nat'l Enquirer "saw" them. Right. And Bat-boy is secretly meeting with Obama. :grr:

On edit: Sorry you got flamed as a wingnut. Tempers are understandably short after 7 1/2 years of unrelenting horse-flop.
