Fundie panties in a knot over PBS' "The Bible's Buried Secrets" program
from the American Family Association, which clearly has too much free time these days:

New PBS program says Bible isn't true, stories made up

Your tax dollars helped fund “The Bible’s Buried Secrets”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Take Action

Sign the petition urging Congress to stop using tax dollars to fund PBS. Let PBS operate like every other non-commercial network, raising its own money from its viewers instead of using tax money.

Petition Text

TO MEMBERS OF CONGRESS

In light of PBS's decision to air "The Bible's Buried Secrets," I ask that you vote to stop funding PBS with tax dollars. PBS should raise its own money. I should not be forced to help pay for its programs.

The Public Broadcasting System (PBS), probably the most liberal network in America, will present a program this fall that says the Old Testament is a bunch of made-up stories that never happened. "The Bible's Buried Secrets" says the Bible is not true. It is scheduled to air on November 18.

Producer Paula Apsell said: "...It's (The Bible's Buried Secrets) designed for intelligent people who are willing to change their mind. …it will give intelligent people who want to read the Bible in a modern way a chance. If we insist on reading the Bible literally, in 25 years, nobody will read it any longer."

Among highlights of "The Bible's Buried Secrets":

• The Old Testament was written in the sixth century BC and hundreds of authors contributed.
• Abraham, Sarah and their offspring didn't exist.
• There is no archaeological evidence of the Exodus.
• Monotheism was a process that took hundreds of years.
• The Israelites were actually Canaanites.
• The Israelites believed that God had a wife.

I have often said that PBS should not receive tax dollars. "The Bible's Buried Secrets" is simply one more reason Congress should stop supporting PBS with our tax dollars. Congress gives PBS hundreds of millions of tax dollars to help support the network.

1. The last thing those in authority want
is for people to start questioning that authority. Personally, I would rather have the facts laid out in front of me and decide if they merit further study rather than be told to believe something that is questionable.

2. "...designed for intelligent people..."
That leaves out the so-called "American Family Association".

3. So PBS is doing a decent documentary on the state of scholarly examination of the Bible
Sounds like they're doing the work of angels here. Good on them.

4. See Thomas Paine's "Age of Reason."
Written over 200 years ago, it laid waste to the books of the Bible like a lumberjack felling trees.

I wonder when the age of reason will finally get here.

6. How does gov't funding of PBS compare with gov't funding of war in Iraq?

7. Much of that is common knowledge among anyone who has read beyond
fundamentalist sources.

9. "New PBS program says Bible isn't true, stories made up" - hey, they got it right!
Good for them.

I've always wondered - just because the bible is clearly mythology, with no evidence to back up its assertions, does that have to mean that people can't be inspired by the random good things its scribes copied from other sources?

I mean, Santa's not real either, but the spirit of giving isn't any less wonderful an idea because of that.

10. PBS costs each American about $1.35 per year in federal funding
Meanwhile, Bush's War costs each of us about 65 cents... per day.

Seems to me the Rev. Donald Assbucket's fiscal priorities are a tad fucked up.
