U.S. general warns against Russian bombers in Cuba
http://www.reuters.com/article/politicsNews/idUSN2229801920080722

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top U.S. Air Force officer warned on Tuesday that Russia would be crossing "a red line" if it were to use Cuba as a refueling base for nuclear-capable bombers.

Gen. Norton Schwartz, whose nomination to become the Air Force's top military officer is being considered by the Senate, was asked at his confirmation hearing how he would advise U.S. policymakers if Russia were to proceed with such a plan.

Russia's Izvestia newspaper this week quoted a "highly placed source" as saying Russia could land Tu-160 supersonic bombers nicknamed "White Swans" in Cuba as a response to a planned U.S. missile defense shield in Europe, which Moscow opposes.

"I certainly would offer best military advice that we should engage the Russians not to pursue that approach," Schwartz told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

"And if they did, I think we should stand strong and indicate that that is something that crosses a threshold, crosses a red line for the United States of America."

11. Indeed, we might as well just surrender to Russia and be done with it
Or nuke ourselves in an effort to keep the "murican way of life" from being defeated.

7. US: "Do as I say, not as I do"
I am so fucking SICK of the United States trying to bully the rest of the entire world into abiding by OUR rules. It's okay for us to place missile defense systems near Russia, which Russia strongly objects to. But we will absolutely NOT allow Russia to place anything in Cuba.

Did I miss something, where the US got to make the rules for the world to abide by?

8. Double standard. Why is it okay to place missiles at their border?
But they can't land in Cuba......

This is all just so much bullshit already...

14. Oh should add
"I forgot to check my calendar," a DC lawyer reader writes. "Apparently today is the day that the entire ... Cuban exile infrastructure that has controlled US Cuba policy for the last fifty years gets indicted: http://www.miamiherald.com/news/breaking-news/story/613611.html." The same U.S. Attorney in the Pharmed case above, Alex Acosta, is also prosecuting UBS for tax evasion, he further notes. Coincidence? "I have a really hard time believing that the same U.S. Attorney brings two tax evasion cases in one month and they are not related," he says.

23. thats it
Yeah one of the brothers is on the board of CANF, presumably large funders. I don't personally know the extent of their ties, however seems to be a confluence of stuff going on as that blog mentioned.

See for example:

Cuba Democracy Groups Facing Audits After Reports of Fraud

The U.S. Agency for International Development will begin conducting financial reviews of about a dozen Cuba democracy groups that receive federal money to answer concerns in Congress about possible fraud totaling at least $500,000.

The reviews follow the agency's suspension of a grant to the Miami-based Grupo de Apoyo a la Democracia after a recent audit turned up $11,000 in irregular spending. The group's executive director did not return an e-mail and a telephone call seeking comment yesterday. The matter has been referred to the agency's inspector general.

In March, agency officials suspended a $2.3 million grant to the Center for a Free Cuba after the group disclosed that a former employee, who later became a White House staffer working on Cuba issues, allegedly had used more than $500,000 in grant money for illegitimate purposes. The former employee, Felipe Sixto, resigned from his Bush administration job March 20 after the allegations came to light.

The case is under investigation by the Department of Justice and the USAID inspector general.
