3. Sewage Goes One Cesspool Too Far
Kudos to Fighting Irish and his LTR blog...he pretty much nails what's at play here:

http://ltradio.blogspot.com/

To be a "shock jock"...and that's what Sewage is, he needs to stir the pot...make noise or else get bypassed for another hate talker on the dial. His motif for years has been to spew his hate to a small audience of like-minded cretins and it's relegated him to the fringes of hate radio stardom. Several years ago, M$NBC was looking at him hosting a show, now he's lucky to host a remote at the local Ace Hardware. He sees how making headlines made Rushbo $400 million and Hannity for another $100...now he wants his piece of the pie...and there's only one way...make noise. But methinks he went in the wrong direction...too smart by half.

While I'm totally against censoring this asshat, I sure wouldn't mind seeing him bankrupted off the air. Sewage doesn't have the clearance or audience to justify the big coin and now his "outburst" could cost him what little he has.

5. "Shock Jocks" are a phenomenon I could easily live without.
Their whole act generally amounts to prank phone calls, adolescent sexual humor and worthless opinions. If I had my way they would be the first people up against the wall when the revolution comes.

6. They Only Do What They're Paid To...
I also have little taste for the crap that flows across the radio dial these days...and that comes from someone whose had a lifelong love and involvement with this medium. The corporate greed and control has all but destroyed its true creative nature and replaced it with freak shows and jukeboxes. A Sewage doesn't walk up to a station and say "put me on"...he is recruited and vetted...and then once on the air he's all but sure to be protected as long as the bills get paid.

The real problem at work here is how poorly radio has deteriorated that such bile is one of the few "Saleable" items they have. The "wisdom" is that something that "sizzles" gets attention...especially with talk radio. I saw this develop in the late 80s and that right wing haters hijacked the medium as they were the ones who brought the "sizzle" that was then sold to a small but very vocal audience.

I'd prefer to revisit Telcom '96...something that was supposed to have been done in 2002...and re-institute ownership regulations that destroyed local radio, competition and diversity in voices.

Cheers...

7. I had a good friend that worked in radio back in the early 80's.
She read the news on the morning drive time show for the number 1 rock station in town. I thought at the time it was a pretty good gig and was surprised when she quit. She told me the station had started to replace all it's managers with a bunch of right wing types. Radio had already deteriorated by then but little did I know how bad it would eventually get.
