John McCain: decline your social security checks!

Is there a petition or movement to pressure John McCain to stop cashing his social security checks? Since he thinks social security is an "absolute disgrace," perhaps he shouldn't participate in the system. It's not like he needs the money, what with his Navy pension, Senate salary, and wealthy wife.

For John McCain to be so critical of the system, yet continue to accept and cash checks from it every month is the ultimate in hypocrisy.

I've searched, but haven't found anything asking McSame to give up his social security nest egg. Does anything exist, and if not, how would one go about starting something?

Once someone applies for SS they get it regardless if want it or not. He could donate it to some charity though.

Sure John Sidney McCain III has called SSI a disgrace and that is a disgrace.
BUT
People who want to eliminate SSI entirely will begin by getting us to resent the fact that wealthy people also get SSI. "They don't need it. Why should they get it?" And if that movement gets going, then the anti-SSI people can finally cut into the system. BUT WHO WILL DECIDE UPON THE CUT OFF POINT? And where will that be? Anyone receiving above the median income at retirement won't get SSI? What happens if you were earning $75K at retirement so you're way above average so the Means Testers say you don't need SSI and then you're hit by a major illness that bankrupts you at 70?

It is more important to REMOVE THE CAP ON PAYROLL TAXES FOR SSI. Right now, SSI payroll taxes STOP BEING DEDUCTED on incomes above $100K. So the person earning $100K pays the same SSI payroll tax as those earning double what he/she does, the same as those earning $600K or even $4,000,000.

I am opposed to this kind of political action because it is an ad hominem attack and I do not agree with the justification you offer because it sets an unreasonable ethical standard for all of us, not just John McCain. It is the same as saying Al Gore should not ride on an airplane because it emits carbon, or Charlie Rangel should not benefit from rent control. It is the same as saying that a congressman that votes against a pay raise should not be allowed to collect it, or that a person who does not support the war on terrorism should not be protected from terrorists.

I am not an advocate of John McCain's position on social security; he is wrong on all counts. But he is entitled to collect the benefits he has earned under the law, and we should defend his right to this benefit as we would defend our own.
