Race - I gotta get this off my chest
I'm sick and tired of Race in America being about Black and White.

As a brown person, y'all make me feel like I have to choose sides sometimes, and it's irksome.

From now on, I'm human, and I don't care what color you are - if you're fucked up, you're fucked up, and if you're fabulous, you're fabulous.

So there.

1. I know *exactly* how you feel.
See, I've got like a whole SHITLOAD of freckles, and sometimes it's just so conflicting to determine which color I am.

White? Orange? White? Orange?

:(

2. I felt the same way when I read some of Malcolm X's stuff
But now I go even further. I'm a Human Animal- a "person." Animals are people too.

We're all made of the same stuff- division is an illusion.

4. Exactly.
i saw this awesome PBS Special - the Journey of Man - This guy traced human migration patterns throughout the world based on a marker on the Y-chromosome.

We're all related, so we need to let the tribalism go.

8. Tribalism is hard wired, unfortunately
Ever read about the "Monkey Sphere"?

http://www.cracked.com/article_14990_what-monkeysphere.html

Our huge problem is that we developed hard-wired strategies to survive in a hostile world- and very few of those strategies had to do with cooperation. Now that we have bigger societies and different needs, we're having to push our ability to adapt beyond the limits it was built for...and even worse, we're working directly AGAINST instincts that have worked for us for millennia.

I think we can do it. It's NOT going to be easy, though.

22. Screw you guys.
You ain't much if you ain't Dutch. The rest just plays along.

Ever since we discovered slave-trading, we were a multi racial nation. And we booted out the Mayflower heroes as well! You're all there because of us, so don't forget: One nation, under Oranje.

Apart from that, if you drink wodka, you're my friend.

6. Kind of funny that even in genetics
when laymen talk about "race" specific genes, geneticists start talking about genotypes and phenotypes.

Kind of odd that the people most shrill about pointing out cultural differences and culture of origin differences are as hung up on skin color as the people they criticize.

AS IF, there were pure "phenotypes" anywhere.

Here's a thought folks. If we all descended from a common maternal ancestor somewhere in the Okavanga delta . . . I think the race card is for racists and people who can't get past skin color.

Sign me up for the human race, please.

snork. Besides, calling someone a phenotypist just doesn't have the same sting!

7. I am an oppressed white male!!!
HA!! As Obama is proving, his presidency wont be about black/white; it will be about a battle between the thinking and the non-thinking, the compassionate versus the selfish, the rich versus the poor.

Obama will win and we will vanquish the self described "patriot" and hopefully crush the white male power structure in favor of a more social system. The social system that has created this great country but is spurned by those promoting a false sense of equity among people.

13. who is "y'all?"
Edited on Wed Jul-23-08 12:14 PM by noiretblu
if you want to be a part of the dialogue (and you should be), then you need to join it. african americans have been vocal because we had to be. otherwise we'd all still be drinking from colored fountains and sitting at the back of the bus, jim crow made no exceptions for brown, red, or yellow people.

15. y'all is directed at anyone
that sees things in that Black/White binary.

I'm neither/nor - my people have had our own struggles, that I wouldn't think to pull others into - well unless they are british.

But even those are sectarian - not based on all black or all white, like here in the US.
