Breaking: Novak hits pedestrian with car, then runs off
Edited on Wed Jul-23-08 11:20 AM by Chimichurri
Syndicated columnist Robert D. Novak was cited by police after he hit a pedestrian with his black Corvette in downtown Washington, D.C., Wednesday morning.

A Politico reporter saw Novak in the front of a police car with a citation in his hand; a WJLA-TV crew and reporter saw Novak as well. The pedestrian, a male in his 60s, was hospitalized at George Washington University Hospital with minor injuries according to the Metro Fire Department. Novak was later released by police and drove away from the scene.

“I didn’t know I hit him,” Novak told Politico. Novak said he was a block away from 18th and K St. NW, where the accident happened, when a bicyclist stopped him and said, "You hit someone." He said he was cited for failing to yield the right of way.

A concierge at 1700 K Street said that she saw a bicyclist yelling and walked outside to see what the commotion was about.

"This guy hit somebody and he won't stop so I'm going to stay here until the police come," Aleta Petty quoted the unnamed bicyclist as saying, as he stood in K Street, blocking traffic.

A source who saw Novak put in the police car and saw the pedestrian on the ground, motionless, said other witnesses said the biker jumped on Novak's car to stop him.

With Novak stopped, cars began honking behind him, and he finally pulled over to the side of the street.

Being 100+ years old isn't easy for anyone, how does one expect Novak to catch his lunch without the assistance of his car?

He is a kind of thing. He does not have empathy for others. He does not feel their suffering. He is downright mean from deep inside himself.

47. Why wasn't he charged with leaving the scene of the accident?
According to the bicyclist's testimony, the injured man was splayed out on Novak's windshield. There's no way Novak missed seeing that.

You're right. He clearly got special treatment.

10. He was jaywalking?
Novak said "He was crossing on the red light. I really hate jaywalkers. I despise them. Since I don't run the country, all I can do is yell at 'em. The other option is to run 'em over, but as a compassionate conservative, I would never do that."

19. that was a different incident- back in 2001. this guy was in the crosswalk, with a 'walk' light.
from the article-

Bono said the pedestrian, who was crossing the street on a "Walk" signal and was in the crosswalk, rolled off the windshield and then Novak made a right into the service lane of K Street. “The car is speeding away. What’s going through my mind is, you just can’t hit a pedestrian and drive away,” Bono said.

Kudos to the bicyclist! If not for him we'd be getting a whole different set of facts (lies) that Novacula would swear to be the truth. Take his license and his Corvette away.

30. David Bono is a hero!
The bicyclist was David Bono, a partner at Harkins Cunningham, who was on his usual bike commute to work at 1700 K St. NW when he saw the accident happen.

As he traveled east on K. Street, crossing 18th, Bono said a "black Corvette convertible with top closed plowed into the guy. The guy is sort of splayed onto the windshield.”

He chased Novak half a block down K St., finally caught up with him and then put his bike in front of the car to block him and called 911. Traffic immediately backed up, horns blared, and commuters finally went into reverse to allow Novak to pull over.

Bono said that throughout, Novak "keeps trying to get away. He keeps trying to go.” He said he vaguely recognized the longtime political reporter and columnist as a Washington celebrity but could not precisely place him.

Finally, Novak put his head out the window of his car and motioned him over. Bono said he told him that you can't hit a pedestrian and just drive away. He said Novak responded: “I didn’t see him there.”

A concierge at 1700 K Street said that she saw a bicyclist yelling and walked outside to see what the commotion was about.

"This guy hit somebody and he won't stop so I'm going to stay here until the police come," Aleta Petty quoted Bono as saying, as he stood in K Street, blocking traffic.

D.C. police confirmed that there was an accident at 18th and K streets N.W. at approximately 10 a.m. involving a black Corvette convertible and that the driver was a white male. An ambulance was called.

26. Have you ever driven there? It's a mad house.
Pedestrians jay-walking, phalanges of gawkers, Ambassador entourages flying by, George Washington University students with permanently attached cell phones and I-Pods, obscured multiple intersections at weird angles. I never had any problems but if I were in my 70's driving around who knows. I give Novfacts a brake on the hit but not the run!

39. So the obvious solution is to speed right through it, huh?
Novak hit a 66 year old man in the crosswalk, crossing with the pedestrian light. The eye witness said that the pedestrian bounced off Novak's windshield. Novak then veered onto a service road and sped away.

and you're defending this?

42. thing sounds too much like a scam to me
person pretends to get hit by a nice looking car. Partner is there to conveniently stop the driver. Nice that the most reliable witness, the driver behind him seems to have driven off too.

Minor injuries and he seems to have been hit by the back of a car.

Of course, I thought I was gonna get hit today too. Guy was sitting at an intersection, a stop sign, only looking one way plus there was a tree blocking visibility in my direction. I'm going down a hill on my bicycle at about 18 mph. I hate when drivers are only looking in one direction.
